The Hopkinson rod impact machine is an experimental setup used to simulate the mechanical behavior of materials under high velocity impact loading conditions. It is a device consisting of one or more rods, usually made of metallic materials, used to generate and transmit shock waves and measure stress and deformation of materials. The basic principle of the Hopkinson rod impact machine is to use the characteristics of the shock rod to transmit shock waves during the loading process. In the experiment, the impact rod was divided into impact part, transmission part and receiving part. The impact part exerts impact load by means of impact or explosion to generate shock waves. The transmitting part transmits the shock wave from the impacting part to the receiving part, and usually adopts a rod-shaped structure. By measuring the propagation velocity, reflection and transmission parameters of the shock wave, combined with the stress and deformation measurement of the sample, the dynamic response characteristics of the material under high-speed shock conditions can be studied, such as the propagation of the stress wave, the stress-strain curve, and the fracture behavior.
