World Hand Hygiene Day: OPHARDT hygiene supports “SAVE LIVES:

First German hospital with complete Hand Hygiene Monitoring in all patient areas

Issum, Germany, 5th of May. As member of the Private Organizations for Patient Safety (POPS), OPHARDT hygiene supports the WHO „Clean is Safer Care” program and the WHO global patient safety campaign “SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands” on 5th of May.

The 5th of May campaign reminds of the importance of appropriate hand hygiene in health care facilities: In Europe, more than 4 million patients are affected by health care associated-infections every year, in the USA more than 1.7 million. Health care-associated infections create additional suffering for patients, prolong hospital stays, represent additional financial burdens for health systems and cause unnecessary deaths. Proper hand disinfection is the single most effective, inexpensive measure to prevent the spread of infections, thus reducing the number of health care associated infections significantly.

Providing opportunities to disinfect and wash the hands is essential for proper hand hygiene according to the WHO “Five Moments for Hand Hygiene” approach. Against this backdrop, OPHARDT hygiene has been supporting health care facilities with durable and reliable dispensing systems and complete hygiene solutions for many decades.

Today, the OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System® takes hand hygiene to the next level: WiFi equipped disinfectant dispensers measure the exact number of hand hygiene events and the amount of liquid used for each hand disinfection. A dedicated software application allows for precise analysis.
Hospital wide hygiene monitoring in all patient areas in specialist hospital Bad Oeynhausen

With 38,000 patients per annum, including 15,000 inpatients, the Heart and Diabetes Center North Rhine-Westphalia (HDZ NRW) is one of the leading institutions of its kind in Europe. The renowned institute is the first German hospital to fully implement a hand hygiene monitoring system in all patient areas.

The OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System® (OHMS) installed in Bad Oeynhausen consists of ingo-man Weco® disinfectant dispensers, which automatically measure the number of activations, and a software application which receives the usage data wirelessly. The software allows for precise analysis and archiving of usage data.

The trial installation in 2014 has proven the system to be extremely reliable including in demanding operating conditions. Against this backdrop, the clinic has chosen the hospital wide installation for all patient areas.
A newly opened intensive care unit (ICU) is already equipped with the OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System®, as well as the intensive care units of Cardiology, Center for Congenital Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiac Catheter Laboratories.

Precise data allows for targeted improvements

All common disinfectant dispensers in patient areas of the HDZ – totaling more than 1,000 – will be replaced by ingo-man Weco® dispensing systems within the next eight months. The precise and complete data capturing of date, time, location and amount of liquid dispensed allows the hospital to clearly identify weak spots and to implement specific improvements such as targeted training sessions or the optimization of dispenser locations.
“Hand hygiene is the entrance door to strengthen health care systems. Staying with the metaphor, the OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System enables hospitals to open this door even wider – thanks to detailed information about actual hand hygiene behaviour”, says Harald Pöpke, Product Manager Hygiene Compliance Solutions.
