Common Warts Overview
Common warts, also known as verruca vulgaris, are caused by nonmalignant strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). They are typically benign lesions that rarely have malignant transformation. On the skin, they appear as rough, painless papules that can be grey or flesh-colored and are found on different body areas. Other subtypes of HPV that are associated with cervical cancer are not the same strains that cause verruca vulgaris (Pope et al., 2020).

Common Warts Treatment Market
The treatment strategies can be organized into three groups: physical or chemical destruction, immune-modulating agents, and antiproliferation agents. Even with treatment, warts tend to recur or spread. The current treatment landscape is governed by following:
Destructive methods aim to destroy or remove the wart itself, not at killing the HP virus. Tissue destruction can be achieved by physical as well as chemical means. Physical methods utilize cold temperatures or mechanical exposure and include cryotherapy, curettage, and surgical excision, and lasers may also be used in this context. Chemical compounds with destructive properties include keratolytic agents, such as salicylic acidorlactic acid, and caustic agents, such as monochloroacetic acid or silver nitrate. Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is most commonly used medication for warts and is available as over-the counter and prescriptive strength. Prescription-strength wart medications with salicylic acid work by removing layers of awart a little bit at a time. Salicylic is available with other formulations and is usually combined with cryotherapy and laser.
Freezing (cryotherapy): Freezing works by causing a blister to form under and around the wart, then the deadtissue sloughs off within a week or so. This method may also stimulate the immune system to fight viral warts. The procedure often requires to be repeated. The side effects include pain, blistering and discolored skin in the treated area.
Other acids: These include trichloroacetic acid, the process requires to first shave the surface of the wart and then applies the acid with a wooden toothpick. It requires repeat treatments every week. Side effects are burning and stinging.
Common Warts Emerging Drugs
• Candin: Nielsen BioSciences
Results in Phase II research involving common and non-common warts among adults were highly encouraging and are now advancing clinical research into the use of the antigen in common and non-common warts. Though not treated, plantar, periungual, flat, facial, and genital warts were evaluated in the Phase II subjects (Nielsen Biosciences, 2021).
Treatment of common warts with intralesional candida antigen appears safe and effective. Further studies are warranted to confirm the dosing scheme and demonstrate safety and effectiveness for FDA licensure (Smith & Johnson, 2019).
• VP-102: Verrica Pharmaceutical
The pharmacodynamic action of the active ingredient in VP-102 (cantharidin) is a vesicant. VP-102 is currently under the US FDA review and could potentially be the first product approved by the FDA to treat mollusum contagiosum (mollusum) - a common, highly contagious skin disease that affects an estimated 6 million people in the United States, primarily children. If approved, VP-102 will be marketed in the United States under the conditionally accepted brand name, YCANTH. Verrica has announced positive top-line results from its COVE-1 Phase II open-label clinical study of VP-102 to treat common warts (Verrica Pharmaceuticals., 2021).
