Seoul, South Korea - Ko-Life Academy, a pioneer in providing online Korean language and job-seeker education services, is actively seeking professionals who are interested to earn a certificate for a chance to be global sitters in Seoul.

As Korea continues to grow as a global hub for business, culture, and education, more men and women are choosing to enter the workforce. Thus, the demand for high-quality childcare services has never been greater. Ko-Life Academy recognizes the importance of proper training and communication skills development as families hope to find professional and legitimate babysitters. Starting June 5, 2023, the company will be offering a Global Sitter course where interested applicants can be proficient in Korean and find opportunities in Seoul within three months. The certificate course starts at US$149 monthly and includes a book in both Korean and English.

Korean Ministry of Labor Finalizing Program for Global Sitters

The Korean government is planning to launch a pilot program to allow Southeast Asian domestic helpers to work in Seoul this year, with a focus on helping families with childcare and housework. However, contrary to earlier proposals, the government will not allow employers to pay these workers below the minimum wage. The program is being considered in response to South Korea's record-low birth rate and is expected to issue E-9 visas to the workers through the addition of domestic help to the list of fields allowed under the employment permit system (EPS). The workers can then be hired by families in Korea through certified service providers as early as this fall.

Although the details are still in the works, a government representative informed Ko-Life Academy of its plans to set the starting salary at KRW 2,000,000 (~Php 82,000) for a 40-hour per week schedule. This would be more than South Korea's minimum wage, which is now at 9,620 won ($7.27) per hour. In comparison, the average hourly wages of local domestic helpers are around 13,000 won for Chinese nationals of Korean descent and over 15,000 won for Koreans. Therefore, the hourly pay of global sitters would not be lower than 30% than that of existing domestic helpers in Korea if the current plans are finalized.

Foreign babysitters are expected to work eight hours a day around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., from Monday to Friday. Overtime wages will be paid beyond the set hours. They are also likely to commute instead of working as live-in helpers, similar to other professional jobs. Other program details such as age range and Korean language proficiency requirements are yet to be finalized but will most likely be based on the current EPS guidelines.

A New Opportunity for Filipinos Looking for Jobs in Korea

Ko-Life Academy acknowledges that Southeast Asians like Filipinos continually explore opportunities to work in Korea. The company is aware that many of the citizens know about the EPS government program, allowing them to legitimately work in Korean manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and the heavy and light industry. However, Ko-Life wants to spread awareness that there are other companies looking for foreign employees to recruit in in-demand professions like IT, engineering, and other technology sectors.

Ko-Life Academy is the first to offer a certificate course for the upcoming global sitter recruitment. This competitive pilot program will start in Seoul and be limited to 100 Filipino sitters. Once the trial period is successful, more opportunities for global sitters are expected, and those with a certificate from Ko-Life Academy can definitely have an advantage.

Applicants should have experience working with children, a passion for child care and education, and a willingness to adapt to new cultures and environments. Those with a professional background and proficiency in English are also preferred, as communication with families is expected to be in both Korean and English.

Of course, knowing the basics of Korean childcare is a must, as well as the readiness to be interviewed to find a suitable family to work for. These are some of the key subjects that will be covered by Ko-Life Academy's Global Sitter learning program, which will be taught by Korean teachers in English and Korean.

"We believe that by providing a multicultural and multilingual environment, we can offer our students a more well-rounded and enriching educational experience," said Ko-Life COO Kim Hyun Woo. "We're excited to welcome global sitters to our academy, and we look forward to helping them prepare for the upcoming opportunities in Seoul."

Ko-Life Academy will also hold free orientations for interested students. Here, the Ko-Life Academy team will introduce its services and the certificate course. There will also be a question-and-answer forum for any inquiries about the program.
