World Hypertension Day: Women Urged to Monitor Blood Pressure Closely to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke
According to ESC spokesperson Professor Angela Maas, "Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women. The risk increases at a lower blood pressure level in women compared to men. My message to all women is to know your values and if your blood pressure is high, seek treatment. Don't underestimate the long-term effects of high blood pressure."
Around one in three women globally has hypertension, making it the leading risk factor for death in women worldwide. It's noted that hypertension is often underestimated and insufficiently treated in women compared to men. This underestimation can lead to heart failure, cognitive decline, and dementia, emphasizing the importance of blood pressure monitoring and treatment.
Highlighting the significance of these findings, Athens-based cardiologist Dr. Ilham Kaffa added, "Preventative care and early detection are vital for women, especially after menopause. Hypertension may cause symptoms often mistaken for menopause, anxiety or stress, including palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, tiredness, and fluid retention. Awareness of these signs is critical for early intervention and treatment."
Women are encouraged to monitor their blood pressure at home, with the guidance of their healthcare provider, starting from the age of 40 if they have a family history of hypertension or have experienced hypertension during pregnancy. Regular check-ups and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help prevent or manage high blood pressure.
"Hypertension can have severe long-term effects if left untreated," said Dr. Kaffa. "Our goal is to foster awareness and urge women to take their blood pressure seriously. Regular monitoring, along with lifestyle changes, can make a significant difference in women's health."
