Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 12th October

10-15-2007 12:42 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week’s Logistics Bulletin is dominated by news that as part of an investigation into suspected cartel activity, European Union antitrust regulators have carried out raids on a number of international freight forwarders. Reports suggest that the investigators were believed to have been tipped off by an insider from one of the companies under investigation. The European Commission has reason to believe that the companies may have violated EC Treaty rules that outlaw restrictive business practices. The Commission did not name the companies. However, Kuehne + Nagel, Schenker, EGL, Expeditors, UTi Worldwide and Panalpina have all released statements concerning the raids.

Elsewhere this week, in Asia, Menlo has set out its expansion strategy for the region, whilst in the US, Ryder has issued a profits warning. Among contract wins and operational announcements this week were developments for Penske, Menlo, TDG, DHL Exel Supply Chain and Atchison Topeka, whilst property, technology and environmental initiatives make the news for household names such as BMW, Cadbury Schweppes, Woolworths and Sainsbury’s.

List of companies grows in forwarding cartel investigation

11 October 2007 - Raids on offices across Europe, Africa and the US following tip off from insider; Kuehne + Nagel, Schenker, EGL, Expeditors, UTi Worldwide and Panalpina have all released statements concerning the raids

As part of an investigation into suspected cartel activity, European Union antitrust regulators have carried out raids on a number of international freight forwarders.

EGL reported that Government authorities visited their offices in Houston and London as part of an industry-wide transportation inquiry into surcharge activities. Kuehne + Nagel announced that the inspection encompassed amongst others Kuehne + Nagel in Switzerland, in the US, and in the UK. The Company stated that it currently sees no reason to suspect any such violations and considers the inspection excessive.

Schenker has announced that within the framework of an inspection ordered by the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels, representatives of the General Directorate for Competition and of the German Federal Antitrust Authority, Bundeskartellamt, have been carrying out an investigation into Schenker AG in Essen. Similar investigations have been conducted at Schenker's offices in South Africa, Switzerland and the US by authorities of the various countries.

Panalpina reported that in connection with alleged concerted practices, the Swiss Federal Competition Commission (Weko) conducted a search at Panalpina in Basel. A similar investigation by US anti-trust authorities was conducted in the Company’s headquarters in the US.
