Uniting for Equity: 3rd Annual Rise & Remember Celebration to Honor George Floyd's Legacy with Ubuntu - Making the Impossible, Possible

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 10, 2023)- George Floyd Global Memorial (GFGM) and the community at George Floyd Square are excited to announce their 3rd Annual Rise & Remember celebration from May 25 to May 27, 2023, at various locations throughout Minneapolis.

The Rise & Remember celebration honors the life and legacy of George Floyd and those who have lost their lives to systemic racism. It's a celebration of the community of George Floyd Square and the progress made toward change in Minneapolis since the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25, 2020.

This year's theme is Ubuntu: Make the Impossible, Possible. Ubuntu is a South African philosophy that values collectivism and the interconnectedness of humanity.

The three-day event will feature educational and empowering activities focused on healing, celebration, and pursuing racial justice and equity. Rise & Remember will host a two-day conference, a candlelight vigil, a gala, and a festival.

The Candlelight Vigil is a public event and will take place on May 25 from 8 PM to 10 PM at George Floyd Square. The vigil will serve as a sacred moment of remembrance, and participants are encouraged to stand in solidarity as they reflect on George Floyd's life and impact.

The Ubuntu Conference is on May 25th and 26th at the Best Buy Headquarters. This event brings together change agents, thought leaders and movement builders committed to fighting for racial justice and equity. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet community organizers, policymakers, cultural curators, artists, activists, and corporate executives. Sessions will focus on topics such as cultural preservation, wealth, health, and power as tools of liberation. Attendees will expand their knowledge and network on how to grow and sustain movements around racial justice and equity.

The George Floyd Global Memorial Gala happens May 26, 2023, at Paisley Park from 6 PM - 11 PM. The 2nd annual gala, "UBUNTU: Make the Impossible, Possible," aims to raise funds to support the operations and efforts of the GFGM for the 2023-2024 year. One of the keynote speakers includes Ndaba Mandela, an author, mentor, spokesperson, political consultant, and the grandson of Nelson Mandela.

The Rise & Remember Festival happens on May 27 at George Floyd Square in Minneapolis. The festival aims to unite people in solidarity and honor George Floyd's memory while celebrating the community's work. The event will include a concert featuring a surprise national artist, live performances, a self-care fair, sports and kids' zones, an art exhibition, food from diverse vendors, mutual aid, black-owned business vendors, and inspirational speakers.

The George Floyd Global Memorial and the community at George Floyd Square invite everyone to attend the Rise & Remember celebration and join their collective pursuit of racial justice and equity.
