Lateral Flow Assays (LFAs) are a type of diagnostic test that are commonly used in medical and veterinary fields to detect the presence of specific biomolecules, such as proteins or nucleic acids. LFAs are also known as immunochromatographic assays or strip tests.

The principle behind LFAs is based on the specific binding of a target biomolecule to a corresponding detection reagent, which is usually an antibody. The detection reagent is conjugated to a colored particle or label, such as colloidal gold, and is immobilized on a test strip. The strip is made up of different zones that are arranged in a specific order. The sample is applied to the sample pad, which is located at one end of the strip, and then flows along the strip due to capillary action. If the target biomolecule is present in the sample, it will bind to the detection reagent and create a colored band in the test zone, indicating a positive result.

LFAs are easy to use, rapid, and do not require specialized equipment or technical expertise, making them a valuable tool for point-of-care testing in low-resource settings. They are commonly used for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, pregnancy testing, and drug screening. However, LFAs have some limitations, including lower sensitivity and specificity compared to laboratory-based assays and the potential for false positive or false negative results.
