Refractories Market: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry

Refractories: An Introduction

Refractories are materials that can withstand high temperatures and harsh environments without losing their physical and chemical properties. These materials are essential in many industrial processes that involve high temperatures, such as the production of steel, cement, glass, and ceramics.

Key Market Players, RHI Magnesita, Vesuvius, Krosaki Harima, Shinagawa Refractories, Saint-Gobain, Corning Incorporated, Morgan Advanced Materials, CoorsTek, HarbisonWalker International, Chosun Refractories

Refractory materials or refractories are materials that are resistant to high temperature, pressure, and chemical corrosion or decomposition. Refractory materials can endure very high temperatures, in excess of the 1,000 °F mark, which is important for many different manufacturing processes and are by nature more heat-resistant than metals. Refractories are therefore to line the inside surfaces of furnaces, kilns, incinerators, and reactors which are used commonly for many industrial processes.

Refractories can be classified into two categories based on their chemical composition: acidic and basic refractories. Acidic refractories are made of materials that have a high content of silica, such as alumina, silica, and zirconia. Basic refractories are made of materials that have a high content of basic oxides, such as magnesia, dolomite, and chrome.

Properties of Refractories

Refractories must have certain properties to be effective in high-temperature applications. These properties include:

High melting point: Refractories must be able to withstand high temperatures without melting or losing their shape.

Thermal shock resistance: Refractories must be able to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking or breaking.

Chemical resistance: Refractories must be resistant to chemical reactions that can occur at high temperatures, such as oxidation and corrosion.

Mechanical strength: Refractories must be strong enough to support the weight of the materials they are holding, such as molten steel or glass.

Applications of Refractories

Refractories are used in a wide range of industrial applications, including:

Steel production: Refractories are used to line the furnaces and ladles used in steel production. They are also used to make the tundish, which is the vessel that holds molten steel before it is poured into molds.

Cement production: Refractories are used to line the kilns used in cement production. They are also used to line the coolers that cool the clinker after it has been heated in the kiln.

Glass production: Refractories are used to line the furnaces and tanks used in glass production. They are also used to make the refractory blocks that hold the glass as it cools.

Ceramics production: Refractories are used to line the kilns and furnaces used in ceramics production. They are also used to make the crucibles and molds used to shape the ceramics.

Types of Refractories

Refractories can be classified into several types based on their chemical composition and manufacturing process. The most common types of refractories are:

Fireclay refractories: These are made of fireclay, which is a type of clay that contains a high percentage of alumina. Fireclay refractories are used in applications where the temperature does not exceed 1,550°C.

High alumina refractories: These are made of materials that contain a high percentage of alumina, such as bauxite and corundum. High alumina refractories are used in applications where the temperature exceeds 1,550°C.

Silica refractories: These are made of materials that contain a high percentage of silica, such as quartz and sand. Silica refractories are used in applications where the temperature does not exceed 1,550°C.

Magnesite refractories: These are made of magnesia, which is a type of mineral that contains magnesium oxide. Magnesite refractories are used in applications where the temperature exceeds 1,550°C.

Dolomite refractories: These are made of dolomite, which is a type of mineral that contains calcium magnesium carbonate. Dolomite refractories are used in applications where the temperature exceeds 1,550°C.

Manufacturing Process of Refractories

The manufacturing process of refractories depends on the type of refractory being produced. However, the basic steps involved in the manufacturing process are:
