Goshala: A Sanctuary for Cows in India
Cows are considered sacred animals in Hinduism, the dominant religion in India.
They are revered as symbols of life, fertility, abundance and generosity. Cows also provide many benefits to humans, such as milk, dung, urine and ghee. However, cows are often neglected, abused or slaughtered in India due to various reasons, such as poverty, urbanization, industrialization and meat consumption. To protect and care for these animals, many people have established goshalas, which are protective shelters for cows and other cattle.
Goshala is a Sanskrit word that means "cow shelter". The concept of goshala has a long history in India and dates back to the 1880s. The first goshala in India was established in Rewari, Haryana by Rao Yudhishter Singh Yadav Since then, hundreds of goshalas have been opened all over the country by individuals, communities, organizations and governments. The main aim of goshalas is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for cows, especially those that are old, sick, injured or abandoned.
Goshalas also rescue cows from
