evm Verkehrs GmbH introduces modern ITCS

Berlin/Koblenz, 17 December 2014 – Several hundred e-tickets were already sold on the first day in Koblenz when evm Verkehrs GmbH started up its new electronic ticketing system. A smooth start was ensured by IVU Traffic Technologies AG. The Berlin IT company supplied a complete Intermodal Transport Control System for operational control and passenger information services together with the entire software and hardware for the electronic fare management.

For customers using the public transport services in and around Koblenz, the fourth of December was a special day. This was when evm Verkehrs GmbH started its new e-ticketing system, replacing the old chip cards. And on the very first day many customers took the opportunity to switch over. “The introduction of the new system was a total success”, says Jürgen Czielinski, Managing Director of evm Verkehrs GmbH. “Our passengers have responded very well to the e-tickets and the changeover was completed without any hitches.” A modern ITCS from IVU Traffic Technologies AG provided the basis for this.

In the previous months IVU had equipped more than 80 buses of evm Verkehrs GmbH and Kraftwagen-Verkehr Koblenz with IVU.ticket.box on-board computers and the IVU.validator customer terminal. This means that in addition to receiving a ticket from the driver, customers can also select their destination at one of the terminals and immediately make a cashless payment for their ticket. The e-ticket complies with the core application of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV-KA) and offers nearly all the functions that the people of Koblenz are used to from their old chip cards.

Passengers also benefit from the improved service quality made possible by the ITCS. The IVU.fleet control software continually receives positional information from all vehicles and uses this to produce graphical displays. This means that the control personnel of evm Verkehrs GmbH are aware at all times of the current operational situation and can make appropriate interventions where necessary. An important goal is to use the available real-time data to offer a much better passenger information service. It is planned to provide this live data and additional functions in 2015. The system is receiving support through the Real Time Initiative of the Rhineland Palatinate Ministry of Internal Affairs, Sport and Infrastructure.

IVU cooperated closely with evm Verkehrs GmbH to implement the ITCS within only a few months. “We are very pleased about the good cooperation. The project – and thus also the customers – have benefitted significantly”, says Dr Andreas Gross-Weege, the responsible member of the management team of IVU Traffic Technologies AG. “Another point is that we exclusively utilised our existing standard system. This made it possible for us to deliver an extensive ITCS system and e-ticketing solution while still keeping to a tight time plan.”

IVU Traffic Technologies AG has been working for more than 35 years with some 350 software engineers to ensure that transport in the world’s major cities operates reliably and on time. People and vehicles in expanding cities are continually on the move – a logistical challenge which calls for intelligent and reliable software systems. The standardised software products of the IVU.suite and tailor-made IT solutions are used to plan, optimise and control the scheduling of vehicle fleets and personnel. Other systems support the choice of branch locations or ensure that election results are determined correctly.
IVU. Systems for vibrant cities.
