Professor Doctor Joseph Chikelue Obi has proposed 3 (Three) Major New (Brexit) Customs Lanes between the UK , Ireland and the EU.

Professor Doctor Joseph Chikelue Obi has proposed 3 (Three) Major New (Brexit) Customs Lanes between the UK , Ireland and the EU.

A Major Political Frontrunner in the 2025 Irish Presidential Elections , Professor Doctor Joseph Chikelue Obi , has just published the following Open Letter ; for the Immediate Attention of All (Brexit-Related) Negotiating Parties - via EU President (Dr) Ursula Von Der Leyen , Irish Prime Minister (Dr) Leo Varadkar TD and UK Prime Minister (The Rt Hon) Rishi Sunak MP .

The Aforementioned Letter , which is said to be causing a Huge Amount of Diplomatic Discourse , is hereby reproduced in full.

RE : THE OBI SOLUTION.

Dear Ursula , Leo and Rishi , (et al) ,

Happy New Year (2023) : It's Very (Very) Heartening to note that All (Three) of You seem to be getting along (rather nicely indeed).

Kindly Permit Me to suggest the 'Obi Solution' to Some of the Major Elements of the current (Brexit-Related) 'Impasse' ; most especially those concerning the necessary 'Customs-Related' aspects of the Northern Ireland (NI) Protocol.

In it's Simplest Form , My (Relatively Optimistic) Proposal fundamentally involves the Creation , as follows , of 3 (Three) Distinct (Customs) Lanes ; not only between the UK and Ireland - but also between the UK and the wider European Union at Large.

GREEN LANE :

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between Northern Ireland (NI) and Great Britain (GB).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between Northern Ireland (NI) and Great Britain (GB).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and the European Union (EU).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland (NI).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between Northern Ireland (NI) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland (NI).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between Northern Ireland (NI) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

ORANGE LANE :

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between Northern Ireland (NI) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods moving between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Northern Ireland (NI).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Great Britain (GB).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between Great Britain (GB) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Great Britain (GB).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between Great Britain (GB) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Great Britain (GB).

* No Customs Checks on ALL Goods (Valued Less £1000 GBP) moving between Great Britain (GB) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Great Britain (GB).

* Discretionary EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued at Exactly £1000 GBP) moving between Great Britain (GB) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

RED LANE :

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Great Britain (GB).

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between Great Britain (GB) and the Republic of Ireland (ROI).

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between Great Britain (GB) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Great Britain (GB).

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between Northern Ireland (NI) and other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU).

* Full EU Customs Checks (and Duties) on ALL Goods (Valued more than £1000 GBP) moving directly between other (Non-Irish) Countries of the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland (NI).

Concerning the Jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) within Northern Ireland (NI) - I would personally feel that a decision on that particular matter should be (Tactfully) Postponed for at least another 36 (Thirty-Six) Months (at least) ; as I firmly believe that the absence of ECJ Jurisdiction within Northern Ireland would be (Treacherously) Inimical to the Hallowed Tenets of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA).

The (Unquestionably Important) Jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) , should therefore , in my Opinion , not be 'Hastily Tampered With' - (most especially) at this particular moment in time , when the Political Possibility , of the Emergence , of a United Island of Ireland , is (Inevitably) on the Table.

Sincerely, Faithfully and Respectfully,

Professor Doctor Joseph Chikelue Obi
