Press release from: Tenants of 323 N Soto

Soto Building

Soto Building

Boyle Heights Tenants at 323 N. Soto are ready to protest!
More than 40 families have endured deplorable living conditions for far too long.
The tenants at 323 N Soto are low-income working class, mostly immigrant families who are suffering horrendous inhumane living conditions.
The tenants have filed numerous complaints with the Los Angeles housing Department and the Los Angeles Health Department over the past years to no avail.
The building is managed by Beachfront Properties Inc, the management has carried out actions of harassment and retaliation against the renters that organized to discuss their tenant rights.
The tenants have taken a proactive stance and contacted their local 54th district Assemblymen, the tenants' unions, and other agencies for assistance.

Health and safety issues are prevalent at 323 N Soto. The tenants cite a building-wide infestation of rats, roaches, bed bugs, mold, faulty electrical wires, faulty plumbing, and egregious living conditions.
On January 17th, 2023, the tenants received a notice from Mayor Karen Bass that the building would be placed in REAP ( Rent Escrow Account Program) as a result of the electrical violations i.e. fire, fuse breakers electrical amps, which were noted as a potentially life-threatening danger to the tenants.

The Tenants of 323 N Soto are grateful to Mayor Bass for her actions but would like the harassment and health and safety issues also addressed i.e. infestations of rats, roaches, bed bugs, mold, handicap non-accessibility, etc. see numerous complaints: See the LAHSD property activity tenant's complaints here: https://housingapp.lacity.org/reportviolation/Pages/PropActivity
The tenants who organized have endured illegal harassment and retaliation from the management company for informing their fellow tenants of their rights.
Some tenants are in fear of retaliation, eviction, and even deportation, others say they will continue to fight for the rights of all!
The tenants of 323 N. Soto said "We demand repairs be made, the infestations are removed, and the building mold walls floor repairs be made!"
"No more forms of harassment! No more retaliation!" "We just want to live in a safe healthy habitable home ", "It's our human right... it's our right as tenants "
