Dysmenorrhea - Drug Pipeline Landscape

Dysmenorrhea - Drug Pipeline Landscape

Dysmenorrhea, also known as painful periods or menstrual cramps, is a common problem experienced by women during their reproductive years. It is estimated that 50-90% of women of reproductive age suffer from dysmenorrhea. The pain is usually felt in the lower abdomen and can range from mild to severe. The pain may begin one to two days before the start of menstru*tion and last for the first few days of bleeding.

There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea is the most common type and is characterized by pain that starts around the time of menstru*tion and is not associated with any other underlying medical condition. Secondary dysmenorrhea is less common and is caused by an underlying medical condition such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or fibroids.

Dysmenorrhea is thought to be caused by the release of prostaglandins, hormones that are involved in the regulation of pain and inflammation. The release of prostaglandins is triggered by the shedding of the uterine lining during menstru*tion. Women who suffer from dysmenorrhea have been found to have higher levels of prostaglandins in their uterine tissue and blood.
