High school writers apply for summer writing scholarship

Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education welcomes high school juniors from around the country to apply for the Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat. This year marks the eleventh anniversary of the retreat, named for the famed author and Adelphi University alum, Alice Hoffman ’73.

This week-long full scholarship program is planned for Monday, July 21 through 25 at Adelphi’s Garden City Campus, Alumni House; application deadline is Thursday, April 10, 2014.

The week-long workshop will give 30 exceptional high school students the experience of what it’s like to be on a college campus, some of whom have never experienced such before. “We want to present opportunities to students who may not have seen college in their future,” says workshop organizer Professor Robert Linne. There will be intensive writing workshops, exercises, performances and interaction between the students, faculty and guest artists.

Ms. Hoffman is a workshop partner, her latest work of fiction, The Museum of Extraordinary Things (released February 2014) is a national bestseller. She had her first novel, Property Of, published while she was still a student and her novel; The Dovekeepers is being made into a television mini-series set for release in 2015. In the fall of 2013, Ms. Hoffman released Survival Lessons, a non-fiction short work about the things she wishes she knew when battling breast cancer.
