UK Business Advised on Importance of Environmental Competitiveness

Press release from: TFM Networks

/ PR Agency: Context
18 September 2007 – Businesses can improve productivity and gain competitive advantage by adopting a more environmental approach to working practices and by using IT more intelligently, according to virtual network operator TFM Networks.

At the Institute of Directors Conference on business competitiveness, the UK’s business leaders we advised on how environmental competitiveness can improve business relationships by providing a positive marketing profile, reducing costs and opening up new business opportunities with existing and new customers.

Businesses account for more than 40% of carbon emissions in the UK. With costs rocketing and concerns over the environmental impact of business growing, IT-led businesses need to look at new ways of working, at how better use of IT can help address environment issues, and, in doing so reduce business costs and improve efficiency.

Stewart Yates, managing director of TFM Networks said: “IT enables a ‘quick win’ as its correct use can have sizable environmental impacts. A 20% saving in energy consumption can have the same effect as a 5% increase in sales, and early adoption will deliver a competitive advantage.

“For example, by supporting flexible working, IP VPN solutions can reduce a business’ fuel costs by 50%. Server hosting can reduce energy and operational costs by a further 40% - helping to significantly cut costs and environmental impact.”

According to the Stern Report, a global warming of five degrees Celsius could reduce global GDP by up to 10%, but it would cost just 1% of global GDP to stabilise atmospheric greenhouse gases at manageable levels. In other words, when it comes to the climate, prevention is much cheaper that cure.

Technology such as VPN solutions can play a key role by providing IT platforms that allow geographically dispersed people to work together as if they were in the same room, reducing their energy consumption and the carbon footprint of the company.

Automation can also provide IT platforms that reduce unnecessary output, resource usage and wastage, encouraging energy management and a paperless office. For more information on using IT more intelligently in order to improve business competitiveness, visit www.tfmnetworks.com
