Human existence without words
Stephanie Lamprea releases "14 Récitations" by Georges AperghisHanover, 14 December 2022: Soprano Stephanie Lamprea releases a recording of Georges Aperghis' "14 Récitations" on 10 February 2023.
The Columbian-American singer has recorded the cycle for unaccompanied voice for the American label New Focus Recordings. The work is one of the most ambitious compositions in the modern vocal repertoire of the avant-garde.
In his work, Aperghis does not subscribe to the conventional approach according to which a composition develops out of singing. Rather, he is concerned with a wide range of different human forms of expression.
He thus completely renounces semantics and a classical-western timbre. Instead, the Greek-French composer uses vocal utterances, extended atonal vocal techniques and repetition. His abstract sound poetry meets a syllable construct. He places vocal sound and speech sound at the centre, using the voice as a dynamic instrument.
With the "Récitations", Aperghis describes people in their "daily struggle of life, people who are not healthy, who have difficulties expressing themselves." Moreover, he also calls this composition a "manifestation of the complex journey of women in search of personal authenticity in a patriarchal world."
Stephanie Lamprea is an architect of new sounds and forms of expression. As a performer and recitalist, specializing in contemporary classical repertoire. Trained as an operatic colouratura, she uses her voice as a mechanism of the performing avant-garde. She sings with a full spectrum of vocal colours (including stutters and throat sounds) and performs in classical, jazz, avant-garde and interdisciplinary settings.
The singer has received awards from the Concert Artist Guild, the St. Botolph Club Foundation, the John Cage Organ Foundation in Halberstadt, Germany, and the Puffin Foundation.
She has performed as a soloist at the performing arts and new music venue R. Intermedium (New York City), Constellation Chicago, Sound Scotland's 2021 soundfestival, National Sawdust (NYC), Shapeshifter Lab, Miller Theater at Columbia University, the Slipper Room, Park Avenue Armory, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Re:Sound Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, and Casa da Música (Porto). She has collaborated with several leading new music ensembles and bands, including the International Contemporary Ensemble, Wavefield Ensemble, So Percussion, Red Note Ensemble, Talujon, Guerilla Opera, and Post Coal Prom Queen.
