Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 14th September

09-17-2007 01:37 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on news in the French press that suggest Geodis is to announce the acquisition of logistics provider Rhode & Liesenfeld within two weeks. Rohde & Liesenfeld is a member of TGA, a global strategic alliance with Geodis Overseas Networks that was established five years ago. In other M&A news, Schneider Logistics has acquired BaoYun Logistics, one of China's top 30 private logistics enterprises. Also in China, Menlo Worldwide has acquired Chic Holdings, a provider of domestic third-party logistics and transportation management services with a network with 130 operating sites in 78 cities.

Amongst contract news this week, wins were reported across Europe and North America in the food, telecoms and furniture sectors, whilst distribution centre developments hit the headlines across Mexico and the US, the UK and Australia, with retail supply chain strategies featuring prominently.

PD Ports announces significant progress toward its Northern Gateway project

Hutchison Ports has removed its objection to the application

PD Ports Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Babcock & Brown Infrastructure Limited (BBI) announced a significant milestone in its proposed development of a new deep sea container terminal at Teesport in the North East of England, know as the Northern Gateway (NGCT). Until today, the application for the required Harbour Revision Order (HRO) had one outstanding objection, which could have necessitated a public inquiry before the Department for Transport.

PD Ports has held a series of discussions with Hutchison about its concerns regarding capacity in the rail network for the increase of rail freight resulting from the proposed Northern Gateway Container Terminal at Teesport. The Northern Gateway will act as a Northern port for Northern markets. As a result of those discussions PD Ports has decided to address Hutchison’s concerns directly by contributing to the provision of upgrades to the East Coast Main Line and diversionary routes. Accordingly, Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited has removed its objection to the application for a Harbour Revision Order made by PD Ports for its Northern Gateway proposal.

This is a major step forward for PD Ports and for Northern shippers and retailers. PD Ports will now work with the Department for Transport, which has already confirmed the withdrawal of the last objection, to enable the Minister to make an early decision. PD Ports is confident the Minister will give PD Ports the final approval needed, as they already have the unanimous approval of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council regarding the plans for the land based elements of NGCT.

The Northern Gateway Container Terminal at Teesport is a proposed £300.0 million investment to create a new deep sea container terminal on the riverside at Teesdock, Redcar. The key features of the proposal are:

> 1 kms of new riverside quay
> Berth pocket depths of 16 mts
> Channel depth to be dredge to a new depth of -14.5 mts (CD)
> The Terminal will have three berths capable of handling the modern vessels carrying up to 8,000 teus of containers.
> Roles for 500 new dock workers
> Roles for an anticipated additional up to 5,000 logistics and other related jobs.

The existing short sea container operations at Teesport will be reorganised to maintain a capacity for 300K teus by first expanding the recently developed TCT2 (Teesport Container Terminal 2) with new storage areas, additional cranage and related capital expenditure.

The anticipated build time for the first phase of NGCT will be 2/3 years from receipt of full and final approval. When fully operational NGCT will have 1.5m teu deep sea capacity to add to existing short sea terminal capacity, making approximately 1.8m teus of capacity at Teesport.
