ESA-EGU EO Excellence Award 2023 - nominations open until 7 December

Paris / Munich, November 2022: New digital technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence are leading to a major transformation in Earth observation and opening a wealth of opportunities for science and business alike. Global challenges such as water resources, climate change and others require even more scientific predictive information and scientific work. Embracing this new era, European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Call for Earth Observation Excellence Award will honour the scientists and researchers behind the solution. Call for nomination is open 5 more weeks until 7December.
This ESA-EGU joint award sets out to recognise, encourage, support, and promote the scientific excellence of individual scientists and teams for their contributions in addressing the challenges of our changing planet.
ESA and EGU will again recognise and honour an individual Early Career Scientist and Team that has contributed to the innovative use of Earth Observations (EO). The nominee's achievements should focus on science and applications based on Earth observations made by European satellites.
Luca Brocca (PhD), Director of Research presso National Research Council of Italy, Winner team of ESA-EGU EO Excellence award in 2021 on the question what has changed for the team after being recognised by the EO international community: "… We are currently involved in 15 research projects funded by ESA, EUMETSAT, the European Commission, and local/regional authorities (8 as PI) that are working on exploiting satellite observations in hydrological applications and developing a digital twin of Earth for hydrology. Moreover, we are highly involved in activities that support users of satellite observations through training, capacity building and webinars. Hydrology is going to play a key role in the current and future activities supported by space agencies and the European Commission".
Nominators have the chance to give young scientists and researchers, whom their highest degree no later than 10 years, a recognition of their early-stage scientific work. This once-in-a-lifetime award honours the importance of research and scientific work behind the extraordinary importance of Earth observation solutions.
The winner of the individual prize in 2021, Benoit Meyssignac : "The major change is probably that I have gained recognition in the space community. It definitely facilitates partnerships, and also a more leading role when I want to participate in or build ambitious research proposals. In addition, it has brought substantial visibility to my research and my observational approach to climate science questions"

The call for nominations and submissions for this joint ESA-EGU Earth Observation Award is open until 7 December 2022. The European Space Sciences Committee (ESSC) of the European Science Foundation will carry out the evaluation.
Following the nomination at www.eoxcellence.com and the independent selection process by ESSC, the awardees will receive their award at a dedicated ceremony during the EGU General Assembly in April 2023 in Vienna, Austria. The prize includes free entry to the event, travel cost, plus recognitions of their work by a wider community.
