Lighting system for farm facilities such as greenhouses, vertical farm, livestock farms, and aquaculture farms is critical for sustainable agriculture and efficient production. Light is biologically effective for plants and animals, and it is being used to achieve efficient and higher productivity. Standardized use of bio-effective spectral lighting control has been common in the field of plant cultivation for quite some time. The use of artificial lighting in livestock housing is becoming ever more common. The major reasons for increasing adoption of lighting technology in livestock farm is mainly due to the shift towards keeping livestock in closed sheds without daylight and the considerable global increase in the demand for meat.
Drivers: Growing demand for animal protein and dairy products
The population across the world is increasing at a rapid pace; it is expected to reach about 9.5 billion in 2050. This rise in population will create additional demand for agricultural and meat supplies. Global per capita meat consumption is also expected to increase by 13% from 45 kg in 2015 to 51 kg per year per person by 2050. It is expected that global meat consumption will exceed that of pork by 2024. Livestock products contribute 12.9% of calories consumed worldwide and 20.3% in developed countries. As per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates, the protein consumption share is estimated to increase by 27.9% worldwide and 47.8% in developed countries by 2050. The demand for meat, especially chicken meat, is rising on a global scale as it is a good alternative to beef (because it fulfills the protein requirement and is less hazardous to the environment). To achieve the desired levels of production, large-scale and rigorous livestock-rearing operations are expected to be implemented, which, in turn, will raise the adoption of modern technological tools to improve meat production capacity and quality and increase profits.
In addition, to cater to the rising demand for better quality and quantity of milk and dairy products, livestock producers are progressively using advanced approaches for animal breeding and its comfort solution. For instance, in the dairy industry, artificial insemination is increasingly being used to increase milk production. This trend is expected to drive the demand for lighting system on livestock farms for increased productivity and animal welfare.
Challenges: Complex requirement for varied light spectrums for different crops
Light is the original source of energy for plant photosynthesis and growth. Sufficient light with the correct spectral range stimulates photosynthesis and is necessary for plant growth. For photosynthesis, plants use light in the photosynthetic-active radiation (PAR) region of wavelengths measured in nanometers. Different characteristics of light, such as wavelength, intensity, duration, and direction, can influence plant growth and development. Plants generally utilize the light spectrum between 400 and 750 nm, which includes red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet light. Some spectrums stimulate vegetative growth and others increase the yield in flowers and fruits. Blue light with a wavelength ranging from 450 to 485 nm helps in the photosynthesis and development of roots and vegetative growth, while red light with a wavelength ranging from 625 to 740 nm promotes flower and fruit production. In some cases, blue light is not useful during the flowering and budding phase, which may yield a smaller number of buds on plants. Conversely, red light with a wavelength from 600 to 640 nm is helpful during the flowering and budding phase, but red light beyond 640 nm can affect the vegetative growth of plants. The selection of the wrong type of LEDs affects plant growth. Though HPS lights promote better growth in plants, they offer a poor color rendering index (CRI). Plants grow in an elongated manner due to the lack of blue/ultraviolet radiation from HPS lights.
