Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a synthetic fluorinated compound with an extremely stable molecular structure. Electric utilities rely heavily on SF6 in electric power systems for voltage electrical insulation, current interruption, and arc quenching in transmission & distribution of electricity due to its unique dielectric properties. However, it is the most powerful greenhouse gas known to date. SF6 is 22,800 times more effective at trapping infrared radiation than an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. SF6 is also a relatively stable molecule, with 3,200-year atmospheric lifespan. The gas remains undamaged for many centuries once released into the atmosphere.

Power transmission and distribution networks rely heavily on switchgears and substations. Switchgear is a collection of devices that monitors, regulates, controls, protects, and isolates electrical equipment throughout the grid, including switches, fuses, circuit breakers, and relays. SF6 gas is chemically stable, nonflammable, and electronegative, with a dielectric value of 2.5 times that of air. As a result, it is extensively employed as electrical insulation, arc quenching, and cooling medium in electrical switchgears, transformers, and substations. If any heat dissipation takes place in electrical power systems such as switchgears due to electric arc discharge, SF6 can absorb electron energy and lower the arc temperature by capturing free electrons due to its high electronegativity and heat transfer properties. The combination of SF6 gas and free electrons produces large, heavy ions with low mobility rates, thus effectively preventing electron avalanches and flashovers.
Gas insulated substation (GIS) uses a superior SF6 at moderate pressure for phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground insulation. SF6 gas is used in high voltage conductors, circuit breaker interrupters, switches, current transformers, and voltage transformers inside grounded metal enclosures. Atmospheric air insulation (AAI) used in conventional, air insulated substations (AIS) requires meters of air insulation to do what SF6 can do in centimeters of SF6 insulation.

Sulfur hexafluoride is an important gas in the semiconductor industry. Sulfur hexafluoride is used for plasma etching of tungsten silicide and polysilicon. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is commonly used as an etching/etching aid gas in fabrication of submicrometer features of modern integrated circuits, as it has higher fluorine content than CF4, but does not undergo polymerization. In the process of radio-frequency (RF) discharge, plasma has become the most popular technology used in the semiconductor industry. In the presence of an RF discharge, SF6, acting as an etching/ etching aid gas, can be decomposed into lower fluorides of sulfur.
