The chemical compound butyraldehyde also referred to as butanal, is a derivative of the butane aldehyde. Butanal is a member of a class of plants that contain propane with a formyl substituent at position 1. This chemical has an offensive odour and is a colourless, flammable liquid. Butanal can dissolve the majority of organic solvents.

With prolonged exposure to air, it oxidises and produces butyric acid. In the production of butanal, propylene reacts with an aqueous rhodium catalyst to produce an aldehyde. The chemical formula of C4H8O and its molecular weight is 72.11 g/mol.

The leading butanal exporting countries are Singapore, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. The other global suppliers and manufacturers are Japan, Saudi Arabia, France, Poland, and the Netherlands.
