Artists at work: Indian born painter Suzanne Oommen works on display at Queen Street Art Crawl

Press release from: zoommen.com

The expressive art of Toronto painter Suzanne Oommen are on display at the Toronto, QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL (torontoartscape.on.ca/qwac/), September 14 - 16, 2007. The graphic designer turned artist immigrated to Toronto from India and has since become an internationally collected painter.

Her patrons range from Alaska to New York to London to Bombay and all points in between. At the popular QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL Suzanne will display her latest collection “Seeding Creation”, showcasing paintings that take a whimsical look at the origins of the life and the universe, and going off on another obliquely related tangent to examine one of our most valuable earthly assets, the tree, in rather painterly terms.

As a challenge to the idea that what defines collectable art is confined to what is found in galleries or museums, the QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL shows that people need look no further than their own local communities to discover independent artists.

Suzanne Oommen will exhibit a collection of about 20 of her pieces at the Outdoor Art Show and Sale, Trinity Bellwoods Park at Queen St. W. at Strachan Ave. in Toronto on September 15th and 16th, 2007 as part of Artscape’s QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL.

For the last few months, Suzanne has been working on her new collection of unique mixed media art for the QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL.

Whether it’s on canvas or masonite, Suzanne has used her creative eye to define her new collection. In some cases, Suzanne knows right away what she plans to make, but other times it is the process that determines what the painting is about. In fact, she’s even coined her own term for her style of art. Suzanne, who studied graphic design at Sophia College, in Bombay, India, calls it facilitating fortuitous energy.

Suzanne’s art can be described as an exploration of random chance, and its translation into symbolic elements and stories about the universe we inhabit. And while that may be the complex way of putting things, Suzanne is always happy to explain it in simpler terms.

"Spontaneity is important to me," Suzanne said. "Some people create art by having everything already planned out before-hand, but I find that the accidental brush strokes and splatters that I allow to just happen to somehow express exactly my thoughts on life.”

"I spend a long time just watching gesso dry.” Suzanne said. "It feels kind of like willing a picture into existence.”

“I find it interesting watching people react to my work. People who have bought my paintings seem to make the decision instantaneously. They often just glance at a piece and say ‘I want that’. It’s as if the spontaneous and impulsive energy that I’ve tried to capture, attracts people with those qualities. It baffles me in a very pleasing way.”

Organized by Artscape, the Queen West Art Crawl is one of the largest multi-disciplinary, community-based festivals that Toronto has to offer. Now in its fifth year, the Queen West Art Crawl celebrates the buzz, character, edge, authenticity and soul of historic Queen Street West with an annual weekend-long festival happening September 14 - 16, 2007.
