Recent Study Discovers How You Can Avoid Messing Up Email

Manila, Philippines -- There's something Google may not be telling you about your emails: that they are being filtered out of the recipients' inboxes and flagged as spam.

Digital marketing agency Spiralytics recently launched a study investigating the issue. They saw that Google Workspace spam detection was getting triggered more often, incorrectly flagging an increasing number of business emails as spam without the sender's knowledge.

However, there's a fix.

Uncovering the Source Of Email Deliverability Issues

No modern business can thrive without email. Enterprises use it not only for internal coordination and communications but also for marketing, pushing their products and services to their customers directly. It's crucial that these emails reach their customers' inboxes; emails filtered as spam are seen as untrustworthy-if seen at all.

However, deliverability issues continue to plague businesses. According to Validity, one in every six emails ends up either in the recipient's spam folder or remains undelivered.

Email hosting service providers are bolstering their efforts to protect user inboxes from spam and spoofing emails. Spiralytics uncovered an unforeseen consequence of such initiatives.

In 2022, they noticed that a growing number of incoming emails were being flagged as spam. They looked further and learned that each email failed Google's Check MX tool.

The finding prompted them to launch a detailed study with a sample size of over a hundred clients. They uncovered that only 17% of business emails were free of errors, while an even smaller percentage of 9% of email domains passed Google's security controls.

After further research, they discovered that the source of the issue is that senders aren't configuring their emails correctly.

Discovering Solutions to Avoid Email Deliverability Issues

The study uses the data gathered to form two viable solutions marketers can use to avoid email deliverability issues: email domain validation and email domain authentication.

The first method, email domain validation, focuses on identifying whether an email address is real or fake. More than a straightforward syntax check, it looks into the domain's mail exchange (MX) record. This method helps ensure that business emails aren't flagged as spam.

The second method, email authentication, verifies that an email isn't a cyber threat to a user's inbox. Roughly seven in every ten emails are classified as malicious, meaning email authentication is necessary for marketers to ensure that their emails make it through security controls.
