Building the Arab Sustainable Energy Caliber: Five Interns at a Time
Cairo, Egypt –3 December, 2013- The Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) hosts five more young talents from Egypt, Morocco, Sudan and Yemen. Interns joined RCREEE’s Arab Program for Sustainable Energy Youth™ (APSEY) in its second round (July 2013 – January 2014). APSEY seeks improving the young Arab young professionals’ caliber in renewable energy and energy efficiency fields and enabling jobs creation.
As the Arab energy market suffers a gap in sustainable energy practical experience for young talent, RCREEE has launched Pan-Arab internship program to connect industry needs to academic practices. APSEY also enables RCREEE to review and fulfill Arab states’ sustainable energy needs and to create a more competitive job market.
”In this round, we relied on previous experience to make the internship program more interactive and diversified. Our group of young professionals gains both technical and business mix of assignments, field trips, local and international trainings”, said Noha Gamal, Program Manager, RCREEE.
In its first round which started January 2013, RCREEE hosted six interns from Egypt, Sudan, Palestine and Tunisia. APSEY alumni headed back to their home countries and now contribute to major renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives and projects. Some of them also continued to engage with RCREEE in remote assignments and project assistance.
The outcomes of the first round include:
• A monitoring and evaluation templates for the most common measures in RCREEE member states’ National Energy Efficiency Actions Plans (NEEAPs).
• Pilot study to investigate the readiness of Egyptian Solar Water Heater manufacturers for SHAMCI certification scheme in cooperation with the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) – Lund University in Sweden.
• Subsidy reform study on Arab countries.
• First paper in the region quantifying the externalities of electric power generation in RCREEE’s 13 member states.
About APSEY
Arab Program for Sustainable Energy Youth™ (APSEY) is a regional sustainable energy internship program which targets young professionals and post graduate students of engineering, economy, and law fields from the Arab region. The program aims to boost technical and operational capacities of the region’s young talents interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency fields. The program immerses more than 12 interns every year since 2012 - in two rounds - in a hands-on experience in the center’s research and analysis, policy design, technical assistance, and other related activities. The opportunity covers full international travel and relocation expenses to Cairo, Egypt in addition to a monthly salary. The program is managed by the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), an independent not-for-profit regional organization which aims to enable and increase the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency practices in the Arab region.
