Fabrication bays at Rosyth Dockyard have been fitted with multiple heavy lift cranes from Street Crane.

Babcock Marine, operator of the former Naval Dockyard at Rosyth, has taken delivery of 19 new overhead travelling cranes (OTC’s) from Street Crane Company. The yard is undergoing a refit for its new role as a flexible manufacturing base for commercial, marine and offshore vessels. The new cranes will enhance yard productivity and provide a mechanical handling system with modern standards of safe lifting and performance.

Street Crane is the UK’s largest manufacturer of factory cranes and hoists. The company has provided a complete turnkey service including design, manufacture, installation and commissioning. This has also required the decommissioning and removal of eight old cranes.

The overhead cranes are all of double girder construction and range in capacity from ten to 35 tonnes safe working load. Street’s advanced ZX hoist and VX custom-built hoists are used throughout. All cranes have digital load displays and mandatory overload protection.

Productivity and safety were key design priorities so cranes will be capable of up to 32 metres per minute long travel and 20 metres per minute cross travel with maximum and minimum vertical movement of 3.3 and 0.33 metres per minute. Load stability is assured by the use of inverter control on all crane motions to give smooth step-free acceleration and deceleration. A marine specification paint system was selected for all structural components to counter the saline atmosphere.

Additional safety equipment installed includes anti-collision systems, floodlights, flashing approach lights and audible alarms. Manual control will be by radio remote so that operators can work from a position that gives maximum safety and visibility. Pendant back-up is also provided.

Sales director Chris Lindley-Smith commented, “This is a major modernisation programme for a shipyard of national importance and we are delighted that our overhead travelling cranes were selected to meet the critical demands this application. The cranes and hoists were fabricated and assembled in our Derbyshire factory and were installed in September with testing and commissioning through October.”
