Mobile drinking water treatment plant M6: fit for service worldwide

Advantage of the Berkefeld M6: its compact and robust structure, ease-of-use and highly effective process technology.

Advantage of the Berkefeld M6: its compact and robust structure, ease-of-use and highly effective process technology.

The water technology company Berkefeld presented a new, mobile water treatment plant to about 80 guests, especially military personnel and staff of civil aid organizations from many countries around the world. The system, named Berkefeld M6, produces with the aid of a combination of various process steps – including ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis – and depending on the salt content 6 cubic metres of clean drinking water per hour. To demonstrate the plant’s easy transportability and handling it was flown to the Celle military airfield suspended from a Type MI8 helicopter as an external load, set down in front of the guests and within only a few minutes assistants had connected it and put it into operation.

The main advantage of the newly presented Berkefeld M6 drinking water treatment plant is its high efficiency along with its very compact and robust structure, as well as its very flexible treatment technology. The system was conceived especially to meet the requirements of the military. The plant weighs 2.2 t and its dimensions are 2.1m x 1.5m x 1.95m. As the presentation event demonstrated, it can be suspended from a helicopter as an external load, or transported in the cargo hold of an aircraft or by truck or trailer. Together with a generator and all accessories the Berkefeld M6 can also be installed in an ISO container. The developers also paid special attention to simple handling in commissioning and ongoing operation. The plant has an intuitively operable, intelligent user interface (HMI), and can be run automatically. With its highly effective and flexible long-adjusted system technology and high-grade steel piping, which also fulfills strict hygiene demands, it can treat almost all available raw water. The plant encompasses the system steps of pre-treatment, inline flocculation, pre-filtration, ultrafiltration by a ceramic CeraMem membrane, reverse osmosis, UV and disinfection. Depending on the raw water quality, the respective system steps required can be optimally actuated and combined with each other. Even from sea water with a salt content of 46,000 ppm, the plant can with the reverse osmosis produce about 1.7 m3 of drinking water per hour. The Berkefeld M6 meets the current military standards and can also be deployed in extreme climate zones (A1, B2 and C2 according to STANAG 4370/AECTP-230).
