Growing concerns regarding infant nutrition and need for animal feed additives for increasing metabolism in livestock are major factors driving revenue growth of the market.
Nucleotides are low-molecular-weight intracellular compounds that are essential in many biochemical processes. They are particularly important as precursors for nucleic acid synthesis in rapidly dividing cells, such as lymphoid and epithelial cells, in mucosa. Nucleotides are made up of a purine or pyrimidine base, which can be synthesized from glutamine, aspartic acid, glycine, formate, and carbon dioxide, as precursors within cells. Nucleotides assist in digestion, immune function, and absorption of other micronutrients in diet and are mostly obtained from mammalian milk. Human milk is recognized to have a high concentration of nucleotides, leading to efforts for human baby formulas by adding nucleotides. Human milk contains nucleotides, which account for nearly 2% to 5% of total nonprotein nitrogen and is higher than that found in ruminants. Human colostrum contains 53-58 mg/l nucleotides, while mature milk contains about 33 mg/l. Nucleotides are involved in various metabolic processes, may help to breastfeed children in different ways and serve as nucleic acid building blocks. This may be important for rapid early development of infant's immune system, which expands predominantly in response to invading bacteria, particularly on mucosae of gut. Nucleotides carry chemical energy, operate as coenzyme components, and regulate biological activities in a number of biosynthetic pathways. Growth of gut mucosa may be aided by nucleotides.
