Athlete's foot Overview
"Athlete's foot" is a fungal infection and also known as "Tinea pedis". A fungus that grows mainly in warm moist environments causes this infection that involves the feet and toes. Approximately everyone is exposed to this fungus, but one's immune system determines whether an individual will develop infection. Tinea infections are caused by dermatophytes and are classified by the involved site.
Athlete's foot Diagnosis
Tinea pedis infections are typically easy to distinguish and diagnose. However, complete identification of the causative fungi should be established to confirm a diagnosis and ensure proper treatment. Diagnosis of tinea pedis is based on history and clinical appearance of the feet in addition to direct microscopy of a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation. Cultures or histological examinations are rarely required. A Wood's lamp is not usually helpful in diagnosing tinea pedis but can be used to rule out other diagnoses like infection with Malassezia furfur or erythrasma-Malassezia furfur and Corynebacterium minutissimum both fluoresce under ultraviolet light while other common dermatophytes do not.
Athlete's foot Treatment
Present treatment modalities come in several forms. Topical agents include creams, powders, and sprays. Creams and sprays are more effective than powders. Furthermore, patients with interdigital tinea pedis can be treated with a topical antifungal. Patients with moccasin, vesicular or ulcerative tinea pedis, or persistent tinea pedis may require oral antifungal treatment.
Athlete's foot Types
There are three types of Tinea Pedis: vesicular, moccasin, and interdigital. The vesicular type generally affects the sole of the foot, and on the other hand, the moccasin type typically affects the lateral aspects and soles of the feet and is characterized by diffuse erythema and scaling. Apart from this, the interspace and underside of the toes are usually involved in the interdigital type; maceration between the toes, which can lead to painful fissures, is often present.
