Robert B. Willumstad School of Business Faculty Receive Bender Research Awards
This year, Adelphi University’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business awarded seven faculty members the Bender Research Fellowship Award. Professor of Decision Sciences Darko Skorin-Kapov received the Three Year Body of Work award for his contribution to research during the last three years. The annual Best Paper Awards went to Professors Jeffrey Goldstein, James K. Hazy, MaryAnne Hyland, David Prottas, Gita Surie, and Monica Yang.Papers:

About the winners:
Dr. Skorin-Kapov of Stony Brook, NY has been teaching at Adelphi since 1999. Prior to that, he taught at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, the University of Zagreb, Croatia and the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands. He has published three book chapters and over 40 refereed journal articles and is on the editorial board for a number of publications. Dr. Skorin-Kopav has made more than 70 presentations, eight as a keynote speaker. He received a Ph.D. in management science/management information systems from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Goldstein of New York, NY teaches both at the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business and at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi. In 2000, he was a visiting professor at the NATO Advanced Studies Institute on Nonlinear Dynamics held in Moscow, Russia. He is the author of more than 80 academic articles and the widely acclaimed book The Unshackled Organization. He is the co-editor-in-chief of the journal Emergence: Complexity and Organization. His most recent book is Complexity and the Nexus of Leadership: Leveraging Nonlinear Science to Create Ecologies of Innovation, co-authored with James K. Hazy, and Benyamin B. Lichtenstein.
Dr. Hazy of Clinton, NJ has been teaching at Adelphi’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business since 2005. He has published over 30 journal articles and book chapters, and has been invited to speak at various venues. The founder and CEO of Leadership Science LLC, a research and consulting firm, Dr. Hazy has more than 25 years of senior executive experience and is the founder of a number of start-up businesses. His previous responsibilities have included Executive Vice President of Business Operations and CFO at an Ernst & Young’s eLearning business as well as Financial Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis and Director of M&A at AT&T. Dr. Hazy earned his doctorate in leadership, organization, and human resource development from The George Washington University.
Dr. Hyland of Island Park, NY joined Adelphi’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business in 1999. She has published four book chapters, nine refereed articles as well as ten presentations. Dr. Hyland earned her Ph.D. in human resource management from Rutgers University.
Dr. Prottas of New York, NY has been teaching management and human resource courses at Adelphi since 2005. The author of three books and book chapters, and more than 20 refereed journal articles, he has presented more than 20 papers at various conferences. Prior to teaching, he spent two decades in financial services as a commercial and investment banker. Dr. Prottas holds a Ph.D. in organizational behavior and human resource management from City University of New York.
Dr. Surie of Forest Hills, NY joined Adelphi in 2004. In March 2013, she received a Fulbright to conduct research on the impact of green energy in rural communities in India during the summers of 2013 and 2014. She has published the book Knowledge, Organizational Evolution and Market Creations: The Globalization of Indian Firms from Steel to Software in 2008, and is currently working on her second book. Dr. Surie holds a Ph.D. in applied economics and managerial science from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Yang of Lynbrook, NY has been teaching management courses at Adelphi since 2003. She previously served as a human resource specialist and as a human resource consultant for two companies in Taiwan. Dr. Yang is the author of four book chapters, six refereed journal articles, and more than 20 presentations. She earned a doctoral degree in organizational behavior from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Bender Research Awards are named after James Bender, founding dean of what is now the Adelphi University’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business. Dean Bender was associated with Adelphi for more than 25 years in various capacities, and bestowed a generous endowment upon the University to fund the awards. The two categories of the Bender Award are the Three Year Body of Work Award and the Best Paper Award, for which full-time faculty in the Willumstad School of Business are eligible to submit papers for review. The entries are judged for quality of writing and potential to make an impact on the discipline.
