For the First Time, a Medical Student Publishes an Insider's Medical School Admissions Guide
New York Native, Alexa M. Mieses, announces the release of her debut book, The Heartbeat of Success: A Med Student’s Guide to Med School Admissions, just in time to kick off the new school year. This is the first time a medical student has written a book about medical school admissions. Ms. Mieses wrote the book as a participant of a book writing challenge sponsored by Small Business Camp and Mentoring in Medicine, Inc.“The Heartbeat of Success” pays special attention to high school, undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students who may be the first in their family to pursue medicine; it covers everything from choosing an undergraduate major, to submitting an application to beginning the first year of medical school. As a current medical student, Alexa M. Mieses knows exactly what it takes to get into medical school. It was not that long ago that she was studying furiously for the MCAT and hitting the medical school interview trail. Her new book offers an insider’s perspective, practical advice, tips, and tricks to successfully gain admission to medical school.
Ms. Mieses is a product of hard work, perseverance and terrific mentorship. She attended public school throughout her life, graduating from the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and later, the City University of New York. Ms. Mieses was enrolled in the SEEK Program, an undergraduate educational opportunity program. She is also the first person in her family to pursue a career in medicine, and is currently pursuing a joint MD/MPH degree at the Icahn School of Medicine, one of the nation’s top medical schools. It is for these reasons that The Heartbeat of Success is not your run-of-the-mill admissions guide.
Jennifer Betancourt, Associate Director of the Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship said, “Alexa Mieses delivers an extraordinary gift to anyone looking to apply to medical school! The Heartbeat of Success is an engaging guide that takes readers by the hand through the stages of preparing and planning for medical school. Alexa shares candidly her well researched advice and personal experiences as well as the experiences of others in order to guide you through the often daunting experience of being a pre-medical student and applying to medical school.”
This book is essential for students who want to know how to be a successful undergraduate, with strong letters of recommendation, a stellar MCAT score, and an outstanding medical school application—everything it takes to be admitted to medical school. Whether you are just beginning to think about a career in medicine or applying to medical school for the second time, Ms. Mieses’ new book has useful advice for everyone. The Heartbeat of Success will be available in October in paperback and for the Kindle, and can be purchased on Amazon and at www.AlexaMieses.com.
Ms. Mieses has worked as a mentor and tutor for premedical and high school students since 2006. She writes regularly for Medscape and has published pieces for POZ Magazine, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Dr. Jennifer Walden, MD and was recently featured at a live reading hosted by the Intima narrative medicine journal. Ms. Mieses is also the Editor-in-Chief of The Rossi, Mount Sinai’s medical education newsletter. She aspires to pursue a career in family medicine.

Florida: October is "Guardianship Month"
Florida Governor Charlie Crist has declared October as “Guardianship Month.”
NASGA would point Governor Crist’s attention to the fact that the original intent of guardianship/conservatorship law - “guard,” “protect” and “conserve” - is no longer being complied with in a frightening and growing number of cases involving court-appointed fiduciaries. Wards' estates, instead of being conserved, are being plundered in the guise of fiduciary fee billings for "services," either not…
