Community Housing Innovations, Inc. Successfully Transitions More Than 200 Homeless to Permanent Housing

Community Housing Innovations, Inc. (CHI) has announced that, since it started its 9W Emergency Housing program in Newburgh three years ago, 212 homeless individuals referred to the Hudson Valley Inn successfully transitioned to permanent housing.

Since the program began, the average stay at the Hudson Valley Inn was 46 days, according to CHI. Further, the average length of stay per year decreased from 48 days in 2010 to 38 days in 2013.

The clients, referred by the Orange County Department of Social Services, included families in crisis. They receive counseling as well as referrals to programs that to assist them with vocational, medical and housing issues.

Community Housing Innovations, Inc. owns and manages over 800 homeless and affordable housing units in Westchester, Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties. The agency has successfully combined state, federal and local grants with private bank financing to create cost-effective solutions to the affordable housing crisis. This month marks the start of the fourth year of the 9W Emergency Housing Program.

“We are pleased to report the success of this program,” says Alexander Roberts, Executive Director, CHI. “It is helping to provide long-term solutions to the region’s homeless problem by providing families with a temporary place to live in, along with the services they need to rebuild their lives and secure permanent housing.”
