Press release from: Denali Telecom Solutions, Inc.

MESA, Ariz. – The externship program at Denali Telecom Solutions, Inc. helps build business skills for urban high school students in a real-world environment.

Denali selected students from the Phoenix Union High School District, Camelback High School DECA Chapter for the launch of its externship program. DECA is an international association of high school students, college students, and teachers that focuses on preparing students to become emerging business leaders and entrepreneurs.

During the externship, students learned about the telecommunications industry and broadband transmission equipment, such as coaxial cable and fiber optics products. Using their school training and the knowledge gained at Denali’s corporate headquarters, students worked in teams to design, create, and market the company’s first booth appearance at the 2013 Cable-Tec Expo, which is sponsored by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and will be held October 22 to 24 in Atlanta, Georgia.

“The objective of the externship was to introduce students to the telecommunications industry and the future education and employment opportunities presented by this rapidly growing technology sector,” said Yen Vu, Denali’s President and CEO. As a graduate of Camelback High School, Vu understood the social-economic challenges for many of these students. “I know what it’s like to be sitting where they are,” Vu said. “When my family came to the U.S. as political refugees we were poor and didn’t speak English. I worked all through school and was the first in my family to go to college. I graduated from law school, and here I am now. If I can make it, I know they can too.”

During the month of November, Denali will be donating a portion of its sales revenue to Camelback High School’s DECA Chapter in hopes that the organization will continue to foster and support its students’ educational and career endeavors whether in telecommunications or other industries.

The school procurement process
Schools, like all public sector bodies and larger private sector organisations, conduct their procurement according to budgets. These budgets are set at the top of the organisation’s tree and filtered down to the budget holders who have been given the responsibility to spend this money. Spend being the operative word. School procurement is a little bit like a communist society – spend it or lose it.
