Risk Assessment and Remediation
New Advances and Practical Solutions to Achieve Cost-Effective, Sustainable Brownfield Remediation
Thursday 24th October 2013, Radisson Blu Portman Hotel, London

Now in its ninth year, Brownfield Briefing's Risk Assessment and Remediation conference will be held on 24th October in London. This highly successful annual event, which precedes the popular Brownfield Briefing Awards on the same evening, will provide the latest update on new advances and technological developments in the risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land and groundwater. With the emphasis on practical case studies, you will benefit from hearing first-hand how companies are achieving cost-effective and sustainable remediation in the current demanding regulatory and economic climate.

The morning session focuses on Risk Assessment. Ann Barker, Chief CLO of the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council will give a Local Authority perspective on the data required to produce a robust, coherent and appropriate risk assessment. Accurate data collection and management are crucial to accurately identifying and assessing risk. Paul Gribble & Richard Hepburn of Alcontrol Laboratories will outline new advances being used by laboratories in the monitoring and detection of different contaminants. Frank Westcott of Westenviro Ltd will round off this session by examining tomorrow’s contaminant, remediation and brownfield challenges.

Effective risk assessment is recognised as being the crux of remediation and brownfield land decisions, increasingly important in the new regulatory climate. SOBRA have recently proposed the development of a “better regulation scheme” for the accreditation and support of risk assessors to improve industry confidence and awareness in risk assessment decisions. The Chair of the sub-group developing this scheme, Rachel Dewhurst Principal Hydrogeologist at MWH will outline the reasons behind the scheme, its proposed form and the benefits and opportunities it will bring to the industry.

One additional presentation from Dr Peter McKendry, Director of SLR Consulting who will explore alternative commercial opportunities for the remediation, development and use of brownfield sites brings the morning session to a close.

The buzzword in the industry, and the focus of an increasing number of remediation projects, is Sustainability and this is the theme for the duration of this year’s conference.

The Developer’s Perspective is one that was of great interest to last year’s audience and this year we have Ian Heasman, Director of Sustainability at Taylor Wimpey giving the developer’s view on the current state of the market, developers’ approach to risk and sustainability and the types of remediation that are taking place.

Paul Bardos, Managing Director of r3 Environmental Technology Ltd and a member of the SURF UK steering group will advise on successfully incorporating sustainability parameters into a remedial options appraisal. This session will be followed by 3 case studies on delivering sustainable remediation in practice:

Rick Parkman, Head of Environmental Liability Management (Northern England), URS Infrastructure & Environment UK will demonstrate their provision of a sustainable remediation solution for one of the UK’s most significant single discharges of heavy metals to coastal waters; Dr Mike Higgins, Managing Director Land Remediation at Hydrock presents a case study on Sludge treatment at BP Llandarcy using Zero CO2 and a UK first in stabilisation/solidification; and Richard Clayton, Managing Director, WSP Remediation will discuss the remediation of a former tar distillery adopting sustainable design principles.

The afternoon session will close with an extended session providing a Spotlight on New Remediation Technologies.

A number of leading remediation companies will showcase, through the use of short case studies, a variety of in-situ, sustainable remediation technologies and their costs, benefits and practical use.

Gareth Leonard,District Manager, UK &Scandinavia, Regenesiswill demonstrate, using a number of example sites, how Petro Cleanze has significantly enhanced the contaminant recovery of physical abstraction systems; David Hughes, Group Marketing Manager EC Harris ARCADIS will present a case study using a combination of in-situ approaches to undertake remediation of chlorinated solvents and LNAPL; Jamie Harris Director, QDS Environmental Ltd explains how they effectively used a biosparge barrier to prevent a major benzene plume impacting the beach adjacent to a former chemicals site; and Dr Ian Ross, Remediation Business Development Manager, FMC Environmental Solutions presents various advances with in-situ and on-site contaminant destruction, comparing the US and European markets.

This conference is always extremely well-attended by professionals across the whole brownfield industry, including Local Authorities and their consultants and contractors. By participating, delegates will benefit from the opportunity to share experiences and hear first-hand examples of best practice in the risk assessment and remediation of brownfield land.

Full details can be found on the event website.

Places are also separately bookable for the Brownfield Briefing Awards taking place later that day. See the Awards website for more details on how to book.
