Research from HR recruitment firm Ortus states that flexible working is the best way to increase day-to-day productivity. The findings note that 96 percent of employees said that flexible workdays would boost their productivity. Fifty-nine percent explained that working from home would achieve the same results, as it would allow them to build their own workspace in a way that inspired their productivity.
In an online survey of roughly 600 human resources professionals, 52 percent of the group said that gym and exercise breaks within the workday could help to bolster productivity levels. Though a flexible work schedule was deemed important by the human resources professionals who were questioned, it was only the sixth most vital benefit according to employees. Workers cited having 25 days of vacation time and a company pension as elements of a working environment that they valued greatly.

This strategy can be implemented very well as long as working hours are managed strategically. Stephen Menko, who is the UK director of Ortus, states, “Getting the most out of the workforce is a core function of the HR profession, and attitudes have changed about how to achieve this. The focus is more on the health and happiness of staff, rather than all-nighters and lots of meetings. Allowing people to work around their lives rather than the other way around is easier today.”

The HR professionals surveyed believe that improving overall company performance was dependent on several factors. These include improved talent management, better succession management, more effective mentoring, and more staff training. A third of those asked stated that they believe that more time off would also improve performance in the long run.

Menko comments, “There is a link from day to day happiness and longer term productivity—a happier, more contented workforce is less likely to be looking for a move. However, in the longer term, talent management is perhaps the most important element of a productive workforce. HR managers are mindful that above all, employees are still driven and are impatient for progress through the ranks, and if not forthcoming, they may start to look elsewhere to further their career.” The professionals at Age121 encourage employers to continually review company policies and protocol in order to ensure that these measures remain most effective when it comes to productivity and employee satisfaction.
