Effortlessly controlling complex technologies: high-contrast controls, self-explanatory icons

(Würzburg/Germany, August 2013) The international Red Dot Jury awards the TEGRIS project of the Tom Cadera design team the "Red Dot Design Award: Best of the Best 2013" for outstanding creative work. With this prize, the jury acknowledges the successful combination of first-class aesthetics and a human-centered user guidance adapted to the requirements of the work environment.

Simplifying Operating Room Complexity

The goal was to develop an intuitive, convenient user interface for the TEGRIS operating room unit that would enable the OR staff to easily and safely integrate a diverse range of OR devices regardless of the device manufacturer. This would include the OR table, monitors, patient data and even music – all systems had to be combined.

Solving this task required close co-operation between CaderaDesign, its programming partner, independis, as well as the customer, medical technology company Maquet. The project involved conceptual and design work as well as programming of the graphical user interface. "The team is excited about the Red Dot Award, all the more because this challenging project required all those involved to show a strong commitment and to think outside the box again and again," chief designer Tom Cadera explains. "This design award is evidence that our ideas and the way we put them into practice have worked out well." And Hannes Schneider, Product Manager for OR Integration with Maquet GmbH, adds: "Our customers appreciate the well-designed user interface of TEGRIS, too."

Realistic Design Facilitates Intuitive Control

Despite its underlying complexity, the software has a clean, high-end look and feel. This is due to the ample room allowed for the interface design incorporating simple, straight forms, as well as the realistic, self-explanatory screen elements. Animated elements reinforce this modern appearance and ensure users intuitively understand how to operate the controls. The positive emotions users experience when operating the interface ("joy of use") increase user acceptance. High-contrast interactive controls and self-explanatory icons enhance operational safety.

Workflow Benefits Hospital Management Staff, OR Teams, and Patients
The TEGRIS user guidance has been especially designed to meet the requirements of surgeons. Every customer can adjust the pre-defined workflow to their specific daily OR processes. This reduces OR staff training needs and saves costs related to hospital management. At the same time, the workflow improves efficiency of OR work routines. A surgical safety checklist in line with the WHO standard to improve patient safety, direct accessibility to the required patient data, and optimized image data management, all these features help keep the focus on the ultimate goal – optimal patient care.

State-of-the-Art Technologies at Work for Trend-Setting Design

The TEGRIS user interface has been designed for usage with non-mobile devices running Windows 7. To develop and implement the user interface, CaderaDesign relied on combined advanced technologies:

• Framework: .NET 3.5
• Programming Language: C#
• Interface Technology: WPF / XAML 3.5
• Development Environment: Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Blend 4.0

The TEGRIS hardware design also originates from the Cadera team. In order to adapt the interface to new technologies and customer requirements, the next development stage of the project has started.
