Straub Medical launches CAPTUREX® filter catheter

Straub® Medical AG today has started sales of its CE-marked Capturex® filter catheter in selected European markets. Capturex® is indicated for filtering of emboli from blood vessels during potentially embolizing procedures on the patient. For this purpose, Capturex® is placed in the vascular system temporarily through a minimally invasive interventional access.

DVT treatment

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) affects approximately 1 in 1’000 adults. The most common complications include pulmonary embolism (PE), with potentially fatal consequences, and post-thrombotic syndrome, severely affecting the patient’s quality of life. DVT treatment historically aimed at prevention of PE, but not directly at removal of the thrombus load from the affected deep vein. Lately, interventionists have begun to treat DVT and to restore flow by endovascular techniques. Endovascular treatment of DVT may help to prevent both PE and post-thrombotic syndrome, but bears a risk of iatrogenic pulmonary embolism, i.e. blood clots or debris, loosened by the treatment, migrating to the lung and obstructing pulmonary vessels with potentially fatal consequences. If placed in the inferior or superior vena cava during DVT treatment, Capturex® may prevent embolisms to the lung arteries or paradox embolisms to the arterial system.

Capturex®

As a strictly peri-interventional device, the Capturex® protection system is designed to overcome important limitations of currently available filters, such as e.g. vena-cava filters. The limitations of such devices include: impossibility to retrieve the filter, impossibility to remove massive clot load from the filter, limited filtration abilities, filter migration and caval wall perforation. The Capturex® filter catheter features a self-expanding filter basket tethered on a wire-reinforced catheter shaft. Its dense filter mesh reliably captures clinically relevant emboli and debris from the bloodstream while maintaining vessel patency. Before removal, the filter can be cleaned by aspiration with suitable catheters. At the end of the procedure protected by Capturex®, the physician simply retracts the filter basket and withdraws the device.
