Never has all this been more important than now. During the pandemic, there was a sharp decline in dermatological screening examinations worldwide. The reason for this is was the fear of contracting the coronavirus. However, delayed diagnosis can have catastrophic consequences.

A retrospective study by Jakobs et al. evaluated the data of more than 100,000 patients. According to the study, skin cancer diagnoses were most severely affected by the corona pandemic. In March 2020, skin tumor diagnoses in dermatology practices decreased by 26%, and in April 2020 by as much as 43%. In general practices, the numbers dropped 21% in March 2020 and again 41% in fall of 2021.

The publication of an Italian research group provided similar results. The figures, collected by the Pathological Reference Center in Rome, show that melanoma incidence numbers dropped from 158 melanomas in the two months before the lockdown to 34 melanomas in the period of the first lockdown. Not because people are getting less ill, but because their illness is not diagnosed in an early stage due to the fear of Covid-19. This is an extremely sad fact since early melanomas are easily treatable, however, higher stage malignant melanomas (which can develop within weeks) will kill the patients in up to >70% of the cases.

At the same time, the progression of tumor thicknesses, the researchers found, was shocking. The average tumor thickness (very important marker for survival chance) increased dramatically from 0.7mm to 2.0mm during the lockdowns. These data on the most dangerous skin cancer, malignant melanoma, impressively show that patients under the lockdown visited the dermatologist less frequently with a suspected diagnosis of skin cancer. At the same time, it can be seen that this waiting behavior led to a most highly concerning increase in tumor thickness.
