Indian Infrastructure Sector To Witness Increased Use Of Green

The Indian Government is mulling to adopt new technologies in building infrastructure projects in the areas of roads, railway, digital ports, aviation and coal.

The infrastructure construction was estimated to be INR 6,265.1 billion in 2016, posting a CAGR of 11.5% during review period of 2012 to 2016. Over the forecast period, the industry is expected to record a CAGR of 12.5%, increasing from INR 7,059.7 billion in 2017 to reach INR 11,301.2 billion by 2021.

Using green technology, the Indian Government has built more than 4,000 km of rural roads in FY2017. In addition, the government extensively used non-conventional materials such as iron, fly ash, unused plastic, cold mix, geo-textiles and copper slag in several road projects across the country.

Furthermore, the government's flag ship rural road program Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) achieved the highest-ever average construction rate of 130 km per day, which led to laying of an additional 47,400 km of roads under the program during 2016-17.

In FY2016-17, the Indian Government made progress in the road and railway areas. During the period, more than 26,000 km of national highways (4 or 6-lane) were constructed, while 953 km of new railway lines were laid. Moreover, over 2000 km of railway track was electrified and more than 1000 km of track was converted to broad gauge from meter gauge and over 1,500 unmanned level crossings were removed.

The Indian Government, which made significant achievements in the aviation, ports, coal and digital infrastructure sectors in FY2016-17, intends to further take up new projects. In ports area, infrastructure projects worth INR1.37 lakh crore will be implemented, while 415 projects worth INR8 lakh core have been marked to follow up under the Sagarmala project.

In the coal sector, the government will focus on application of new technologies including gasification technology. In the aviation sector, the government's priorities include improvement in passenger capacity and development of new destinations, while in digital infrastructure area priorities include further development of the National Optical Fibre Network and creation of new mobile towers in extremists affected area.
