Based on vaccine type, the plant-based vaccines market is segmented into bacterial vaccines, viral vaccines, parasite vaccines, plant-derived virus-like particles (VLPS), and others. The bacterial vaccines segment held the largest share of the market in 2021. Bacterial vaccines may contain live bacteria that are attenuated, inactivated, or killed. Bacterial vaccines are categorized into toxoids, subunit vaccines, killed whole-cell vaccines, and live attenuated vaccines. Toxoids are chemically inactivated toxins from bacteria such as Corynebacterium diphtheria. The subunit vaccines consist only of a single antigen of the pathogen. For a subunit, the immune response is lower than a whole cell. The inactivated vaccines contain killed bacterial cells that are inactivated through chemical, heat, or radiation treatment of the disease-causing bacteria. It reduces yields, and affects fruit quality.
