Charles Belk

Durham, NC - August 8, 2007 - Charles Belk has been named to a two year term on the Board of Directors of the University of Southern California Black Alumni Association. A Durham native and Hillside High School graduate, his primary task as a newly elected board member is to raise money for scholarships for African American students to attend the university.

The son of Durham resident Johnnie Mae Belk, Charles Belk is president and chief branding officer of Charles Belk Management. He is a 1981 graduate of Hillside High School,1985 graduate of the University of Southern California (BS-Electrical Engineering) and a 1987 graduate of Indiana University (MBA). While working at IBM - Research Triangle Park, during a second stint in Durham from 1988 - 1994, he served on the Durham Zoning Commission, the Durham City / County Planning Committee and the Durham County Transportation Advisory Board. He also served on the boards of the Durham Business and Professional Chain, the RTP Chapter of the National Black MBA Chapter, and the RTP Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers - Alumni Extension.

Following his time back in Durham, Charles Belk relocated to Atlanta, where he was VP of Integrated Promotions for Hothouse Inc., an Atlanta-based marketing agency, and served on the board of directors of Georgia Court Appointed Special Advocates (GA CASA), Hughes Spaulding Childrens Hospital, Jomandi Theater, House of Love For the Homeless and the Cobb County Transit Advisory Committee.

"Each day, I wake up feeling blessed that God has given me yet another chance, another day, to experience life to its fullest. Being involved and giving back is the least I can do, considering all the things that people have given me and done for me," Belk responded when asked how does he finds the time to be so involved.

An avid community volunteer, he currently serves on the 2007 Silver Lake Film Festival Board of Directors and the Chaka Khan Foundation Gala Committee, and is a member of the Los Angeles chapters of the National Black MBA Association and The Recording Academy (Grammy Awards).
