The final version of WinRAR 6.10 has been released!

Berlin, January 24th, 2022: RARLAB.COM and win.rar GmbH are proud to present the final release of WinRAR 6.10. WinRAR is being constantly improved to provide the users with a stable and reliable software to compress, secure, and archive their personal data. WinRAR is now fully compatible with Windows 11. This update introduces additional usability enhancements to make the usage of the world’s leading compression and archive management software even more user-friendly.

Support of Windows 11 Explorer context menus:

WinRAR 6.10 is ready for Windows 11! Starting from Windows 11, an application can only add a single top-level command or submenu to an Explorer context menu. If “Cascaded context menus” in the “Integration settings” dialog is activated, this single item is a submenu storing all necessary WinRAR commands. In case this option is disabled, only one extraction command for archives and one archiving command for usual files is available. The user can select these commands using the “Context menu items...” button in the “Integration settings” dialog of WinRAR.

The “Legacy context menus” option in the “Settings/Integration” dialog can be used in Windows 11 if WinRAR commands are missing in the “Show more options” Windows legacy context menu or in context menus of third-party file managers. If WinRAR commands are already present there, it is recommended to turn off the “Legacy context menus” option to prevent duplicating these. This option is only available in Windows 11 and not in older versions of Windows.

In addition, it has been decided to skip support for Windows XP. The minimum required operating system for WinRAR 6.10 is Windows Vista.

Usability improvements:

WinRAR supports, as per design, a wide variety of compressed formats. Now, the user can also decompress the contents of .zst and .zipx archives using Zstandard.

The “Close” item has been added to the “When done” list on the “Advanced” page of the archiving dialog. It closes the WinRAR window when archiving is complete. Also, for the extraction dialog a “When done” list has been added to the “Options” page. It allows to select an action like turning off the PC or closing WinRAR after the extraction process has been completed.

For command line mode, several switches have been added to improve usability, for example, the new -mes switch, which skips encrypted files when extracting or testing. It replaces the former -p- switch.

Previous WinRAR versions could not use the recovery record to repair broken archives if the recovery record size exceed 99% and when the number of recovery volumes was equal or larger than the number of RAR volumes. Now, the maximum size of RAR5 recovery records has been increased to 1000% of the protected data size. Thus, the maximum number of RAR5 recovery volumes can be 10 times larger than protected RAR volumes.

With WinRAR, the user can create self-extracting-archives (SFX archives) when they are not sure that the recipient has the correct program to view the file. Since Windows only supports such executable files up-to 4 GB, an error message is issued during the compression process, immediately after exceeding this threshold. Previously, this error message was only reported after completing the compression.

As usual, bugs which occurred during the usage of previous WinRAR versions have been fixed to provide all users with a stable and bug-free version. A complete list of all improvements and bug fixes can be found here:
