Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Facility, Unit 1 Achieved its First Flux

Northbrook, IL – On February 25, 2013, Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Facility, Unit 1 achieved its first flux. A solar flux is a unit of measurement for solar activity. With the use of heliostat mirrors, the sun’s rays are absorbed and used as a source of energy to heat the boilers located on centralized solar r towers.

Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Facility is a solar thermal power plant that is currently under construction in California’s Mojave Desert. With a planned capacity of 392 megawatts, this plant has the ability to power nearly a half million homes.

This plant will consist of 3 units, and F.E. Moran Special Hazard Systems is supplying the fire protection systems for all three solar thermal power plants. Pre-action sprinkler systems are being designed and installed for the turbine enclosure, turbine bearings, lube oil enclosure, and boiler feed pump. A deluge fire sprinkler is being installed for each transformer. Alarm and detection systems are being installed throughout all three plants and the common area. The fire pumps are monitored by F.E. Moran Special Hazard Systems as well.
