A Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) interface enables smooth processing of complex OLAP queries

Nuremberg, 19.02.2013 – With the new EXASolution OLAP Connector, EXASOL AG, a specialist in high-performance databases, offers its clients an interface with which all kinds of Online Analytic Processing (OLAP) tools can be integrated. With the OLAP Connector based on the MDX standard, EXASOL connects the intuitive analysis world of multidimensional OLAP cubes with the EXASolution scalable relational high-speed database. By making use of virtual cubes (ROLAP = relational OLAP), users can to use their OLAP tools as normal. They can integrate and analyse data from the data warehouse directly in Microsoft Excel PowerPivot tables, for example. The EXASolution OLAP Connector was developed in partnership with Simba Technologies, the leading provider of MDX and other data connectivity solutions.

Rapid data analyses with no elaborate pre-aggregations
For users, the tool’s added value particularly lies in the retention of the familiar frontend and access to up-to-date, detailed data directly in the Excel environment, for example, without having to copy and save this locally. Thus, users are able to develop new analysis procedures without the support of their IT department (self service). This enables more rapid and flexible reactions to customer requirements. Moreover, users also benefit from the discontinuation of elaborate pre-aggregations, as the cubes’ calculations can be performed directly on the raw data. Last but not least, the high performance with data volumes of any size (including big data) in addition to the simple data management round out the advantages of the new EXASolution OLAP Connectors.

What does the EXASolution OLAP Connector comprise?
So-called virtual cubes are defined to be able to process the values of all cubes. The EXASolution OLAP Connector is familiar with the metadata for these cubes. The integrated MDX query engine translates multidimensional MDX queries into relational SQL queries and sends these directly to the EXASolution database. They are calculated there and the results returned via the same channel.

"The combination of MDX interfaces with our high-performance EXASolution database means our customers benefit from extremely fast analyses and real self-service analytics," says Steffen Weissbarth, CEO at EXASOL AG. "We want to make business intelligence easier for our customers by providing intuitive solutions, which are available to them anytime anywhere."

"We are excited to work with EXASOL to add our enterprise grade MDX interfaces to EXASolution" quoted Amyn Rajan, CEO of Simba, "The combination of our MDX engine and the EXASOL high performance database creates an excellent solution for customers that are looking for advanced high performance real time analytics. We look forward to their success with this innovative solution."
