ARBOR BOOKS WARNS OF GHOSTWRITING SCAMS

07-31-2007 10:00 PM CET | Media & Telecommunications

Press release from: Arbor Books, Inc.

(New York, NY)—Arbor Books (arborbooks.com) is working to protect people against scams in the ghostwriting business.

Numerous companies are scamming people who are new to the ghost writing business in various ways:

1) Demanding large payments up front: A therapist paid $25,000 upfront on a $50,000 ghostwriting contract and didn't get a single word written for over 8 months. The therapist even had to resort to begging the ghostwriter and the ghostwriting firm just to get her precious diaries returned.

2) Phony Companies: A police officer was taken in by one fraudulent ghost writing firm thanks to their slick Web site and a deal too good to be true: For $7,995 the ghost writer would write an entire book—and publish it! And if the officer paid in one lump sum, he would get the same job for only $3,995. Much to the police officer's regret, he got only eight poorly-written pages over an excruciating six months—and then the company disappeared.

3) Promises of agent and publishing contracts: A nationally renowned exercise guru was nearly swindled by a fast-talking sales rep shilling for a ghostwriting firm. The salesperson, a one-time bestselling author, promised connections to her agents and publishers. The problem was that the agent knew nothing about her scam. When pressed to put her promises in writing, the fraud fell apart.

4) The bait-and-switch: A retiree was promised that a particular ghost writer would be assigned to write his book. He later discovered that the writer was only a “front” for some hack that was actually doing the writing! (It turned out to be a freshman at a local community college.)

“When it comes to protecting yourself against scams in the ghost writing business, the writer really needs to research numerous companies and ghostwriters,” says Joel Hochman, President of Arbor Books.

“When it comes to choosing a ghostwriter or ghostwriting firm, get the promises in writing,” says Larry Leichman, co-owner of Arbor Books.
