Is it time to throw your Cotton Face Masks?

Don’t throw them just yet, it’s not all bad.

You may have read (or more likely heard) the recent news that Surgical masks are significantly better at preventing particulate penetration even after 10 washes, more about that soon.

Not all cotton masks are equal

Even triple layer masks were found to only prevent 40% of particles when fired at the fabric1. Fired might sound strange, however a sneeze would likely fit here.

Normal usage, such breathing and talking, a TWO LAYER Mask will block 50% 2 without a directly comparable result for THREE LAYERS we are left to assume they are better however assumedly pail in comparison to surgical masks.

Another consideration is fit, in particular if the mask does not have a bendable nose wire, the chances are it is going to perform very poorly.

What about filters?

A well fitted mask, with a pm2.5 filter will add 10-20% per layer, as these are 5 layers this would bring a Three Layer mask close to a surgical mask.

This rules out several very popular masks on the market including, Gildan Everyday masks and Cloke FM Masks.

Surgical masks Stopped up to 98% of particles even after several washes, should you wash a surgical mask? absolutely the data shows that you should be good for several washes, and given the massive environmental impact of masks it is imperative that they are disposed of correctly.

Custom Branded has unfortunately stopped taking orders of their 3Ply mask, w/optional filters for 2021 and are taking orders for January 2022.

If you are looking for a supplier to provide branded face masks this year remember:

• No less than 2 Layers.

• Adjustable nose fit

• Filter Pocket

If you are buying a 2, not 3 layer then we absolutely recommend adding a filter.

As per surgical masks these filters are technically single use, however can and should be washed several times.

Ultimately any face covering is better than nothing and helps stop the spread of viruses. We have links to making your own mask, however you tube is full of great tutorials.
