John di Domenico, AIA Receives Sidney L. Strauss Award

John di Domenico, architectural practitioner, educator, and founding principal of di Domenico + Partners, was honored with the Sidney L. Strauss Award presented by the New York Society of Architects at the Society’s 106th Annual Dinner-Dance on January 15, in recognition of outstanding achievement for the benefit of the architectural profession. He joins the company of noted architects such as Richard Meier, FAIA, James Stewart Polshek, FAIA, and Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, as well as architectural critic Ada Louise Huxtable and urban planner Amanda Burden.

“As a practitioner and educator I am honored to be the recipient of the Sidney L. Strauss award. This award for outstanding achievement in the architectural profession allows me to be a part of the historic legacy of the New York Society of Architects, an organization respected in New York for 106 years. Both in and out of the studio I have always worked to create an academic environment of collaboration and innovation to create memorable buildings and spaces in the city,” remarked di Domenico during the awards presentation held at Tribeca Rooftop. The New York Society of Architects also noted that the evening’s awardees had been acknowledged by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, United States Senator Charles E. Schumer, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and Borough Presidents Ruben Diaz Jr., Marty Markowitz, Scott M. Stringer, and James P. Molinaro.

Throughout his architectural career, di Domenico has fostered a studio-office synergy based on principal-led group involvement that has resulted in a successful architecture and landscape practice and award-winning design accomplishments. His current projects explore innovation and sustainability in the civic realm, including conceptual design for a high speed rail system that redefines travel along the Boston-Washington corridor, transformation of two buildings for Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the development of sustainable landscape design for the United Nations New York campus. Additional highlights of his career include leading the design of Brooklyn’s new Atlantic Terminal Complex, planning and architectural prototypes for the Washington D.C. Metrorail extension along the Dulles Corridor, as well as an on-going 25-year relationship with Jacob K. Javits Convention Center as a consulting architect for interior planning and design.

A member of the architecture faculty at the New York Institute of Technology, Professor di Domenico teaches Design Studio and City Planning. Sharing his equal passions for theory and making has consequently led many NYIT alumni toward collaborative projects in his professional design studio. He has previously served as the Dean and Chair of the Architecture program.

Outside of academic and professional pursuits, di Domenico is an avid painter across mixed media. His work is often a visual commentary on current architecture projects in the studio.

A native New Yorker, di Domenico attended Brooklyn Technical High School and is a graduate of City College and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy. He currently serves on the Boards of the New York Transit Museum and Coney Island USA.
