THE MANAGER'S JOURNEY - NEW WAY TO LEARN MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Conventional management training programs are usually one-time events lasting a few days, contain too much material to absorb in the time available, and raise unrealistic expectations. Another approach is needed.Toronto, January 4, 2006—A non-traditional management training program will be launched by professional speaker, consultant and author Helen Wilkie on January 11. The program, called “The Manager’s Journey”, is based on a monthly group telecoaching call, allowing participants to take part without leaving home or office, no matter where in the world they are located.
According to Wilkie, traditional management training has inherent drawbacks. Normally a one-time event lasting a few days, it takes participants away from their jobs at a time when they need to be concentrating on their new duties, and allows little or no time to implement one skill before moving on to the next. Wilkie believes expectations of these programs are unrealistic.
“Being appointed as a manager is an event, but becoming a manager is a journey,” says Wilkie. Over the past twenty years she has heard new and recently appointed managers repeatedly ask the same questions and worry about the same problems, and she decided to create a program that would more effectively meet their needs.
The calls are supplemented and supported by communication via e-mail throughout each month, and a private blog allows participants to ask questions, put forward their own opinions and discuss how they are putting the lessons into practice. This allows them to learn from one another as well as the facilitator.
The advantages of The Manager’s Journey are:
• Convenience—no travel
• Focus—each call and support material focuses on one specific aspect of management
• Time—monthly schedule allows time to implement the ideas and techniques before moving on to the next subject
• Support—participants have access to Wilkie to ask questions specific to their own situations
• Monitoring—self-assessment tools are built into each stage of The Journey
