NY Eye Doctors on Glaucoma Risks & Exams for Early Diagnosis

“In consideration of Prevent Blindness America designating January as National Glaucoma Awareness Month, on behalf of the eye doctors and staff at Seeta Eye Centers we wanted to provide useful patient information about glaucoma risks and the need to have regular eye exams with glaucoma evaluations in order to avoid vision loss through early detection, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma,” stated Satish Modi, M.D. “The most recent data tells us that over 2.8 million people over the of age 40 suffer from the most common type of glaucoma called primary open-angle glaucoma. This is considerable as it reflects a 22 percent increase since 2000,” commented Dr. Modi.

“What I constantly advise patients is that the critical element in managing glaucoma risk and avoiding vision loss from glaucoma is to be consistent in having regular eye exams at the time intervals recommended by your eye doctor,” said Andreas Wolter, M.D. a NY Ophthalmologist at Seeta Eye Centers. “We know that everyone is at risk for glaucoma but that certain factors can increase that risk-and patients should keep them in mind. Age is important-once we enter our 40’s, the risk of glaucoma begins to increase-and once we reach the age of 60 the risk of glaucoma increases by 4-9 times, even without any family history or medical issues. If you also have either systemic or eye diseases that challenge circulation-such as diabetes this can further increase your risk,” explained Dr. Wolter. “Another important factor that increases glaucoma risk is race. The African-American population seems to be 6-8 times at greater risk and Hispanics over 60 years of age also are more prone to developing glaucoma.”

“Patients should be reassured that we are here to help them with in office advanced technology diagnostic tools such as ocular coherence tomography (OCT) testing-somewhat like an CT scan of the optic nerve, better eye drops for glaucoma, excellent laser treatments and new glaucoma surgery techniques that use microscopic glaucoma stents to reduce eye pressure when we perform bladeless cataract surgery. The advances in glaucoma treatment and cataract surgery have been great,” summarized Dr. Modi.
