I am in close contact with a family of 6 Australians, stranded overseas due to Covid lockdowns. In September 2020 they contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) requesting assistance to return home to Australia, they were ignored and left for over a year in a foreign country without any support or assistance due to Government neglect.

They contacted DFAT again this year, desperate for help, the department finally responded but took their time to do so. The family had to survive on charity, they lived in an abandoned house full of mold, they had donated food brough to them which was only take-away food and whilst they were thankful at they had food to eat, the fat and oil content being consumed in the food caused many health issues over the year. DFAT approved a loan to the family that has to be paid back within 6 months, and they have organized flights home, however the family cant travel on the dates that the department has booked due to medical reasons and the department is refusing to change the booking. 2 of the children’s passports had expired and Melek only had just over a month validity remaining on hers, without any legal residence status she was staying in the country illegally and with a passport that was due to expire. The embassy did assist with obtaining new passports for the children and Melek however once they received them, the embassy stopped contacting them even though they are supposed to check for her welfare.

Because of all the stress this has caused the mother, Melek, tried to commit suicide, she hears voices in her head and is now admitted into the psychiatric ward of the hospital, she has also just been diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Her husband, Imran has recently had a Gallbladder attack and is awaiting urgent surgery which they have asked DFAT for an additional 3000 to cover the cost of surgery and other medical bills, this was 3 weeks ago and they still do not have a response, only they were told that the department will respond in due course. Imran also has PTSD because of the stress this has caused. Imran also has to have his gallbladder removed urgently and there is complications with his liver. Both Imran and Melek are still in hospital and are not able to travel.

The youngest child is only 4 years old, he can’t talk or walk, he has been diagnosed with Leukemia and needs urgent medical assistance. He is also admitted into hospital. The medical treatments and facilities are not as they are in Australia and recovery here will take a much longer time, permitting that recovery does happen, given the nature of the illnesses this is not something that guaranteed, as I’m sure you can imagine.

The embassy in Croatia called to check on Melek’s welfare however they stopped calling once she received her passport. For Imran, they never contacted at all to check on his welfare, perhaps because he is only a permanent resident and not a citizen? The children are all suffering trauma as both of their parents are in hospital. The embassy has not even enquired to their welfare. Due to the situation and the delecate mental state, Imran and Melek have authorized people to act on their behalf for all matters with DFAT, they have done this by email, the embassy called Imran to verify that he gave consent for them to speak with the authorized persons and he gave this over the phone.

They stated that they also required to verify with Melek, Imran gave permission for them to speak with her as she is on strict orders from the doctor to not be involved with these matters while her mental state is unstable. When the embassy called Melek they used the verbal consent as a ploy to speak with her about a “message from Canberra”. They told her that they required a document from the doctor stating that she was not fit to fly in order for them to change the flight date, otherwise they could not change it. Melek is mentally unstable at this time due to DFAT and they took advantage of her situation by manipulating the call to suit themselves and blatantly disregarding the doctors orders. Have they no shame

This family is going through living hell and has medical and mental trauma all caused by DFAT, they have been abandoned and neglected by their own country.
